Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition Brings the Complete Lands Between Journey to Nintendo Switch 2 in August

Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition will launch for Nintendo Switch 2 on August 28, giving Nintendo players access to FromSoftware’s acclaimed open world action RPG after an earlier delay. The release will include the base game and the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, making it the most complete version of Elden Ring available on the new handheld system.

For players who missed Elden Ring on other platforms, this edition offers the full journey through the Lands Between from the start. That means the original campaign, its massive open world, its major bosses, its optional regions, and the later Shadow of the Erdtree content will all be part of the package. The expansion adds new areas, bosses, weapons, armor, abilities, and deeper lore for players who want to explore beyond the base game’s main path.

The Switch 2 version is also not only a simple port. FromSoftware is adding new content to Tarnished Edition, including two new starting classes, fresh armor sets, and the ability to customize Torrent, the Spectral Steed. That gives returning players a reason to pay attention, even if they have already completed Elden Ring on PC, PlayStation, or Xbox.

The Switch 2 version could become a major test for FromSoftware’s optimization

The biggest question is performance. Elden Ring is one of the most ambitious open world games of the last several years, and it has not always been known for perfect technical performance. The game reportedly struggled to maintain smooth frame rates during earlier Switch 2 preview showings, which raised concern about how well it would run on Nintendo’s handheld hardware.

That does not mean the final version will have the same issues. Developers often improve performance between preview builds and launch, and the delay may have given FromSoftware more time to adjust the game for the Switch 2. Still, this will be an important release to watch because Elden Ring depends heavily on timing, movement, dodging, and responsive combat. A stable frame rate will matter more here than in many slower paced games.

New content will also come to other platforms

Nintendo Switch 2 players are getting Tarnished Edition as a full package, but the newly added content will not remain exclusive to that platform. FromSoftware plans to make the extra classes, armor, and Torrent customization available for purchase on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, and PC.

That is a smart move because Elden Ring already has a large existing audience. Locking new gameplay related content only to Switch 2 could have frustrated longtime players. Selling it separately on other systems gives veterans a way to access the additions without buying the full game again.

Pricing has not been confirmed for either Tarnished Edition or the standalone content. Since the package includes the base game and Shadow of the Erdtree, a price near $79.99 would not be surprising, but that remains an estimate until official details are shared.

Elden Ring may find a new audience on Nintendo’s handheld

Elden Ring has already become one of the defining games of the decade, but a Switch 2 release could bring it to a different kind of audience. Nintendo players who prefer handheld play may finally be able to experience the full game without needing a PC, PlayStation, or Xbox.

The portable factor is important. Elden Ring is a huge game, but its structure can work well in shorter sessions. Exploring a region, clearing a small dungeon, fighting a field boss, or collecting materials can all fit into handheld play if performance holds up. Shadow of the Erdtree is more demanding and difficult, but it also adds more value for players who want a long term game on the system.

The release also matters for the Switch 2 library. Bringing a game as large and respected as Elden Ring to the platform helps position Nintendo’s new hardware as more capable of handling major third party titles. If Tarnished Edition runs well, it could build confidence in future ports of demanding games.

For now, Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition looks like one of the biggest Switch 2 releases of the summer. It gives new players the complete adventure, gives returning players extra content, and gives FromSoftware a chance to prove that the Lands Between can work properly on Nintendo’s next generation handheld.
