DOOM: The Dark Ages Gets Revelations Expansion in July With New Campaign, Demons, and Chain Spear

DOOM: The Dark Ages is getting a major new expansion much sooner than expected. DOOM: The Dark Ages: Revelations will launch on July 9, bringing a new campaign chapter, new demons, deeper puzzles, extra mysteries, and a new weapon built to change how returning players fight.

The expansion was announced during the Xbox Games Showcase 2026, where Bethesda and id Software confirmed that Revelations will continue the Slayer’s story with a darker and more personal setup. The expansion follows the Slayer after he is wounded and betrayed, trapped in a harsh vision of purgatory, and forced to confront painful truths before he can regain strength.

This is not being positioned as a small content drop. The description calls it an all new campaign expansion, and earlier comments around the DLC suggested it was being treated almost like a sequel in scope and ambition. That makes the July release date more interesting, especially for players who have already finished the base game and wanted a strong reason to return.

Revelations adds a new campaign chapter built around purgatory and betrayal

The story of Revelations begins with the Slayer imprisoned inside his own mind. To escape, he must face an abomination of the gods and help set his followers on a path to freedom. A mysterious ally will also play a role, although id Software has not fully explained who this character is or how they connect to the wider story.

That setup fits the tone of DOOM: The Dark Ages, which already pushed the series deeper into a medieval inspired world of gods, monsters, siege warfare, and brutal fantasy imagery. Revelations appears to lean even harder into that mythic side of the Slayer’s saga.

The expansion will include new levels, deeper puzzles, new demons, and more mysteries. That suggests id Software is not only expanding combat arenas, but also adding more environmental problem solving and lore focused discovery.

The Chain Spear could change the rhythm of combat

The biggest gameplay addition is the Chain Spear. id Software describes it as a deadly new weapon that opens up another dimension of combat. It is designed to reward mastery with more power and mobility, which could make it one of the most important tools in the expansion.

DOOM’s combat works best when every weapon has a clear purpose. If the Chain Spear adds both movement and damage, it could give players a more aggressive way to close distance, reposition, interrupt enemies, or create openings during heavier fights.

That matters because DOOM: The Dark Ages already changed the series formula by making the Slayer feel heavier and more grounded than in DOOM Eternal. A weapon that adds extra mobility could give Revelations a different pace without abandoning the base game’s brutal medieval combat style.

The expansion also brings new demons, which should help keep encounters fresh. New enemies are important in any DOOM expansion because they force players to rethink combat habits. A new weapon is useful, but it becomes more meaningful when the enemy roster is built to test it.

Ripatorium 3.0 adds new maps and better customization

Revelations will also include the highly requested Ripatorium 3.0 update. This mode is getting three new maps, new demons, and fully upgraded new weapons tied to the DLC. It will also add deeper customization, improved pass code generation, and the ability to save and load personal presets.

That sounds like a smart addition for players who enjoy DOOM beyond the campaign. A stronger Ripatorium gives the game more replay value and lets players experiment with combat setups outside the main story. Saving presets should also make it easier to return to favorite challenge layouts or share specific combat scenarios.

The expansion will not be included with Xbox Game Pass. Players who already own the Premium Edition or Premium Upgrade will receive it as part of that package. Others will be able to buy Revelations separately at launch.

That may disappoint some Game Pass subscribers, but it follows the usual pattern for large premium expansions. The base game can remain part of the subscription while major DLC remains a paid add on.

Revelations gives DOOM fans a quick reason to return

The July 9 launch gives DOOM: The Dark Ages a strong post launch boost. Instead of waiting many months for meaningful new content, players will have a new campaign chapter shortly after the expansion reveal.

For id Software, Revelations is a chance to build on the base game’s strengths while adding more variety. The new campaign setting gives the story a darker edge, the Chain Spear adds a fresh combat hook, and Ripatorium 3.0 gives dedicated players more tools for replay.

The main question is how substantial the expansion will feel. If the new levels, demons, puzzles, and weapon design are as meaningful as the announcement suggests, Revelations could become more than a simple DLC. It could serve as the next major chapter in the Slayer’s current era.
