Discord Server Boosts Explained: What They Are, What They Unlock, and Whether They Are Worth It

If you spend any time in active Discord communities, you have probably noticed the Nitro booster role sitting in server member lists, or seen a server proudly displaying a banner at the top of its channel list. Both of those are the result of Server Boosts, and understanding how they work explains a lot about why some servers feel noticeably more polished than others.

Server Boosting is Discord's system for letting individual members upgrade the server they are in. It is a collective effort: the more people who boost, the better the features the whole community gets to enjoy.

What a Server Boost Actually Is

A Server Boost is a recurring monthly contribution that a member makes to a specific server. Each boost counts toward that server's total boost count, and the total determines what level the server sits at. Higher levels unlock better features for everyone in the server, not just the people who contributed boosts.

Boosts are tied to a monthly billing cycle. If someone stops boosting, their contribution drops from the server's total at the end of that month, which can cause the server to drop a level if it falls below the threshold. This is why server owners often work to maintain a stable base of regular boosters rather than relying on occasional one-off contributions.

Anyone with a Discord account can boost a server regardless of whether they have Nitro. The difference is cost. Nitro subscribers receive two free boosts per month included with their subscription, which they can apply to any server they choose. They also get a 30% discount on any additional boosts they want to purchase beyond those two. Non-Nitro users can purchase boosts directly at full price.

The Three Boost Levels and What Each One Unlocks

Discord uses a three-tier level system. Each level requires a cumulative number of boosts and unlocks an increasingly substantial set of perks for the server.

Level 1 requires 2 boosts. At this level the server gains 100 emoji slots up from the default 50, 15 sticker slots, 24 soundboard slots, audio quality at 128kbps, a custom server invite background, an animated server icon if the owner uploads one, and 60fps screen sharing for all members.

Level 2 requires 7 boosts. Everything from Level 1 carries over, and the server gains 150 emoji slots, 30 sticker slots, 36 soundboard slots, audio quality at 256kbps, a server banner that appears at the top of the channel list, a 100MB file upload limit for all members including non-Nitro users, and 1080p 60fps screen sharing quality.

Level 3 requires 14 boosts. This is the top tier. It includes 250 emoji slots, 60 sticker slots, 48 soundboard slots, audio quality at 384kbps, a 500MB file upload limit for all members, a custom vanity URL for the server invite link, and a custom role icon. For communities where voice quality matters, the jump from 96kbps on an unboosted server to 384kbps at Level 3 is genuinely meaningful. Background noise becomes noticeably cleaner and voice conversations feel more natural.

Additional Perks You Can Unlock Separately

Discord updated the boosting system to allow servers to unlock certain perks independently of their level progression. Currently two perks work this way: Enhanced Role Styles and Server Tags.

Enhanced Role Styles add animated gradient and holographic effects to member roles in the server. Instead of a standard solid colour, roles can display shifting animations that make moderators, VIPs, and contributors stand out visually in the member list and in chat.

Server Tags give server members a short four-character tag identifier that appears on their Discord profile across the platform, letting them represent the community wherever they go on Discord.

Each of these additional perks requires 3 boosts allocated specifically to that perk. Critically, these boosts are separate from the boosts that count toward your server level. If your server has 14 boosts maintaining Level 3 and you want to add Server Tags, you need 3 additional boosts on top of those 14. Boosts already allocated to your level do not count toward the additional perks.

What Boosters Get in Return

Boosting is not entirely selfless. Members who boost a server receive a few things in return.

They get a Nitro Booster role that the server owner can customise with any name, colour, and permissions they choose. By convention most servers use this to give boosters access to exclusive channels, early announcements, or special voice rooms. They also get a booster badge that appears on their Discord profile, which evolves visually the longer they maintain a consecutive boosting streak on any server. The badge is subtle but visible to anyone who views their profile.

What server owners do with the booster role is entirely up to them. Some servers give boosters significant perks like access to private channels or the ability to post images in channels where regular members cannot. Others treat it as a thank-you badge with no functional advantage beyond the cosmetic. If you are deciding whether to boost a specific server, checking what the server offers boosters before committing is straightforward: most servers list their booster perks in a pinned message or a dedicated information channel.

How to Boost a Server

Step 1: Navigate to the Server

Open Discord and go to the server you want to boost. Click the server name at the top of the channel list to open the server dropdown menu.

Step 2: Select Server Boost

In the dropdown menu, click Server Boost. This opens the boosting panel showing the server's current level, how many boosts it has, and how many are needed to reach the next level.

Step 3: Apply Your Boost

If you have unused boosts from a Nitro subscription, you will see the option to apply them here. If you do not have available boosts, Discord shows you the option to purchase one or more. Select the number of boosts you want to apply and confirm. Discord asks you to confirm twice to prevent accidental boosts.

Once you boost, your contribution appears on the server's boost panel immediately and the server level updates if your boost pushed it over a threshold.

Transferring and Managing Your Boosts

If you want to move a boost from one server to another, go to User Settings by clicking the gear icon next to your username, then select the Server Boost tab. Find your active boost, click the three-dot menu next to it, and select Transfer Boost. Choose the destination server. Note that you can only transfer a boost once every seven days, so choose carefully before confirming the transfer.

If you cancel a boost, the contribution remains active until the end of the current billing period. The server does not lose the boost immediately.

Is Boosting Worth It

For members of a community they genuinely enjoy, boosting can feel like a direct investment in that experience. If a server you spend hours in every week is sitting at Level 0 and struggling with limited emoji slots and lower audio quality, contributing a boost provides tangible improvements for everyone there.

For server owners, the math around boosting is worth thinking through. Full Nitro includes two free boosts worth roughly ten dollars each if purchased separately, which means Nitro subscribers are already covering a Level 1 server on their own. A small coordinated push from a few members can get a community to Level 2 quickly without anyone spending a significant amount.

The perks that genuinely change the day-to-day experience for a community are the audio quality improvement at Level 3, the upload limit increase at Level 2 which removes the frustrating limit for non-Nitro members trying to share files, and the emoji slot expansion which matters enormously for communities that rely heavily on custom emoji in their culture. The vanity URL at Level 3 matters most for larger public servers where a memorable invite link carries real value for growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if a server loses boosts and drops a level?

The server's perks are immediately reduced to match the new level. Emoji slots that were available at a higher level become inaccessible, the server banner may disappear, and audio quality drops. Any emoji that were uploaded and assigned to slots beyond the new limit become unusable until the server reaches that level again.

Can I boost the same server multiple times?

Yes. You can apply multiple boosts to the same server. This is particularly relevant for Nitro subscribers who want to direct both of their included boosts to one server rather than splitting them between two.

Do boosts apply immediately?

Yes. The moment you confirm a boost, it is applied to the server and counts toward the total. If your boost pushes the server over a level threshold, the new perks unlock immediately.

Can I get a refund on a Server Boost?

Discord does not offer refunds on Server Boost purchases. As with most of Discord's digital purchases, the no-refund policy applies. If you boost a server by mistake, you can transfer the boost to a different server after seven days.

How does the 30% Nitro discount on boosts work?

Nitro subscribers pay 30% less than the standard price when purchasing additional boosts beyond the two included with their subscription. The discount applies automatically at checkout. Nitro Basic subscribers do not receive this discount and are not eligible for the two included free boosts.
