Diablo 5 Will Show How Diablo Conquered Sanctuary Instead of Leaving His Victory Off Screen

Blizzard has confirmed that Diablo 5 will explain how Diablo managed to conquer Sanctuary, even though the game begins after his victory has already taken place.

The next mainline entry starts with Sanctuary under Diablo's control and humanity in ruins. However, the development team says players will gradually learn how that situation happened as they move through the campaign.

Senior game director Joe Shely confirmed that Diablo's rise will not be left entirely off screen, while narrative director Jennifer Hepler said the story will directly dramatize parts of his takeover.

Diablo already controls Sanctuary when the game begins

Diablo 5 takes place after Diablo has captured Sanctuary and turned it into a base for his wider campaign in the Eternal Conflict.

From Westmarch, Diablo uses Sanctuary's people and souls as weapons while preparing for an invasion of the Heavens.

That places him in a very different narrative position from earlier games, where Diablo often existed as a distant threat that players gradually approached.

In Diablo 5, he is already present and influencing the world from the beginning.

The player takes the role of the Heir of Westmarch, who begins the game on the run.

Westmarch has already fallen, and Diablo sits on the throne while the player starts with relatively limited power.

Players will learn how Diablo won

Blizzard says the campaign will gradually reveal the events that led to Diablo's victory.

Shely explained that the structure supports the traditional RPG progression of beginning as a relatively weak character and growing substantially stronger over time.

As the player explores the world, more information about Diablo's takeover will be uncovered.

That means the game will not simply provide a short explanation through text or background lore.

Important parts of Diablo's rise are expected to appear directly within the narrative.

Hepler confirmed that the campaign will include dramatized sequences showing how Diablo came to power, alongside discoveries that explain the larger circumstances behind his victory.

The player's connection to Diablo is central to the story

One of the main mysteries involves the Heir of Westmarch and an unusual relationship with Diablo.

The player discovers that they can enter Diablo's terror realm and return alive.

According to Blizzard, nobody else appears capable of doing this.

Understanding why the player possesses that ability will become an important part of the campaign.

The story will explore what other powers the Heir may possess and why there is a connection between the character and Diablo.

That relationship may also be connected to Diablo's successful conquest of Sanctuary.

Hepler indicated that learning how this bond affected Diablo's ability to achieve his victory will unfold gradually throughout the story.

The conflict is designed to feel more personal

The connection between the protagonist and Diablo gives the campaign a more direct relationship between hero and villain.

Instead of simply pursuing Diablo because he represents a threat to Sanctuary, the player will have personal reasons to understand how his rise occurred and what role their own character may have played in it.

Blizzard says that knowledge will affect how victories against Diablo and his forces are presented during the campaign.

The structure also gives the game room to tell parts of the story across different time periods.

Previous comments from the development team have described Diablo 5 as dealing with the past, the present devastation caused by Diablo's conquest and future threats beginning to form within Sanctuary.

Diablo 5 begins with humanity already defeated

The decision to start after Sanctuary has fallen creates a different opening from previous games.

Players will not begin by trying to prevent Diablo from taking control.

Instead, they enter a world where the major defeat has already happened.

Westmarch has burned, humanity has suffered heavily and Diablo already possesses political and supernatural power over Sanctuary.

That allows the campaign to focus initially on survival and discovery before the player's power increases.

The caravan of allies assembled by the Heir of Westmarch will also become part of the journey across the damaged world.

Diablo's takeover will be part of the playable narrative

Blizzard has not yet explained exactly how the historical sections will be presented.

They could involve flashbacks, visions, playable sequences or another storytelling structure.

What has been confirmed is that the takeover will not simply remain an unseen event that occurred between games.

Players will see dramatizations of Diablo's rise and uncover further details while progressing through the campaign.

That makes the fall of Sanctuary part of Diablo 5's central mystery rather than only its starting condition.

Diablo 5 is currently in development and is scheduled to launch in spring 2029.
