Dave Bautista is reportedly in talks to play Kratos in Amazon’s live action God of War television series after an injury forced original lead Ryan Hurst to leave the role.
Hurst reportedly tore his bicep while performing an on set stunt. The injury required surgery and created a recovery period long enough to threaten the production schedule for the show’s first season.
Rather than delay the entire project, the production team decided to search for another actor. Bautista has now emerged as the leading candidate, although Amazon has not officially confirmed that an agreement has been completed.
The former professional wrestler is best known for playing Drax in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His other major roles include Glossu Rabban in the Dune films, Duke Cody in Glass Onion, and Scott Ward in Army of the Dead.
Ryan Hurst’s injury caused a major production problem
Hurst had been selected to play the older Norse era version of Kratos. His casting connected him to the franchise after he previously voiced Thor in God of War Ragnarök.
However, the reported bicep injury made it difficult for him to continue with the physically demanding production. Playing Kratos requires extensive action work, combat choreography, and a large physical presence, so waiting for a complete recovery could have caused a lengthy delay.

Kratos may be an equally suitable role for him. Both characters are physically imposing warriors, but the older Kratos offers more dramatic material through his relationship with Atreus and his struggle to control the violence of his past.
The part would also give Bautista a leading role in a long form television production, an area in which he has worked less frequently than film.
Amazon has not announced a revised production schedule
The full effect of Hurst’s departure on the series remains unclear.
Amazon has not confirmed whether filming has paused, how much material was completed before the injury, or when the first season is expected to arrive. A completed deal with Bautista could allow production to resume, but costumes, stunt preparation, rehearsals, and possible reshoots would still require time.
The series is expected to adapt the Norse era of God of War, beginning with the relationship between Kratos and Atreus. Their journey to scatter Faye’s ashes leads them through the Nine Realms and into conflict with figures from Norse mythology.
Bautista has not officially secured the role, but his reported negotiations indicate that Amazon wants to keep the project moving after an unexpected setback. His experience in physical roles and increasingly serious dramatic performances could make him a convincing choice for the older Kratos.
