Claude May Ask Some Users to Verify Their Identity With Government ID

Anthropic may begin asking some Claude users to verify their age or identity by uploading official documents such as a passport, driver’s license, or government issued ID. The change is expected to begin on July 8 and will apply only in certain situations, not to every Claude account.

The company has updated its privacy policy to allow identity checks when needed for account management, fraud prevention, security investigations, or enforcement of platform rules. Anthropic says the process will affect a limited number of people, though it has not explained exactly what activity or account conditions could trigger a request.

Identity verification is becoming more common across online platforms, particularly as companies face pressure to prevent fraud, reduce abuse, follow age related rules, and deal with automated accounts. However, asking people to upload official documents also creates understandable privacy concerns.

Why Claude Could Request ID Verification

Anthropic says identity checks may be used in several cases, including verifying a person’s age, reducing fraudulent activity, investigating suspected misuse, and helping enforce its terms of service.

The company may retain the result of a verification, such as confirmation that an account holder meets a required age threshold. That does not necessarily mean it will retain a full copy of every document forever, but the policy change means some verification data could be stored as part of account records.

The verification process is expected to be handled by Persona, a third party identity verification provider. This means information submitted for a check may be processed through an external service rather than being reviewed only by Anthropic.

Possible Reason for VerificationWhat It Could Involve
Age confirmationChecking whether an account holder meets a required age
Fraud preventionConfirming an account is connected to a real person
Security investigationsReviewing suspicious activity or possible misuse
Rule enforcementConfirming account details during a policy review
Account protectionHelping prevent impersonation or unauthorized access

The Policy May Raise Privacy Questions for Claude Users

Uploading an identity document to access an online service can feel very different from confirming an email address or phone number. Government documents can contain highly sensitive details, including a full legal name, date of birth, address, photograph, document number, and nationality.

Anthropic says the measure will affect only a small proportion of accounts, but that may offer limited reassurance to people who are uncomfortable sharing identification with an AI company or its verification partner.

People may also want more clarity around the policy. Important questions include how long verification information will be retained, whether documents are deleted after checks are complete, what users can do if they refuse verification, and whether access to Claude could be restricted until the process is finished.

More Online Platforms Are Moving Toward Age and Identity Checks

Age verification and identity checks have become a wider issue across social platforms, gaming services, online communities, and AI tools. Supporters say these systems can help reduce scams, automated abuse, and access to unsuitable content.

Critics argue that they can create privacy risks and make anonymous participation on the internet more difficult. Even when verification is intended for safety, centralizing sensitive identity data can make people uneasy, especially if they do not know how the information will be secured or shared.

For Claude users, the change does not mean everyone will suddenly be asked for a passport or driver’s license. But it does show that identity verification is becoming a more important part of how AI services manage accounts.

Anyone asked to complete a verification check should read the request carefully, confirm it appears inside Claude’s official account process, and review the privacy information before submitting documents.
