Google is testing a new visual transition for Reading mode in Chrome on Android. The change adds a short blur animation that plays when users open or exit Reading mode, replacing the abrupt jump between the webpage and the reading interface.
The feature is hidden behind the “Reader Mode blur transition animation” flag in the Canary version of Chrome for Android, where the blur effect is already working during early testing.

Reading mode continues to present supported pages in a simplified, text-focused layout that strips away surrounding page elements and keeps the main article content. Existing controls for font style, text size, and background color remain unchanged. No new Reading mode tools, layout adjustments, or interface controls are included with this test.
The blur animation affects only the transition between the standard page view and Reading mode. Page loading, navigation behavior, and other parts of the browser interface remain untouched in the current Canary version.
There is no confirmed timeline for when the change may reach the stable version of Chrome for Android, and features introduced behind flags can still change, expand, or be removed during testing.
