Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Ads Confirm It Will Not Join Xbox Game Pass at Launch

Microsoft’s marketing for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 now makes one point very clear: the game will not be available through Xbox Game Pass this year. New advertisements for the shooter include a direct disclaimer stating that it is “not on Xbox Game Pass this year,” confirming that players will need to buy the game separately at launch.

The ads reportedly began appearing across Facebook, Instagram, and Threads on June 27. The message is unusual because Xbox has spent years promoting Game Pass as the main way to access major first party releases, including Call of Duty after Microsoft completed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

Modern Warfare 4 marks a clear change in that approach.

Xbox Is Moving New Call of Duty Games Away From Day One Game Pass

Microsoft previously confirmed that future Call of Duty titles would not arrive on Game Pass at launch. Instead, new games are expected to join the service around a year after release.

That decision appears to be linked to the commercial impact of putting one of the industry’s biggest annual franchises into a subscription catalogue immediately. Players could choose to pay for one month of Game Pass rather than buy a full priced copy of Call of Duty, reducing direct sales revenue.

The change does not mean that Call of Duty is leaving Game Pass permanently. Older entries are still expected to arrive on the service, and Modern Warfare 4 could join later. The major difference is that Xbox is no longer treating the newest Call of Duty game as a day one subscription benefit.

The Ads Highlight Xbox’s Changing Strategy

The wording in the ads is blunt, but it also avoids confusion. Anyone who sees the promotion will know that Game Pass is not a way to play Modern Warfare 4 at release.

For Xbox, that may be a necessary reset after years of shifting messages around Game Pass pricing, tiers, access limits, and first party launches. The company has tried several approaches to subscription gaming, but the cost of adding expensive blockbuster games on day one has become harder to justify.

Call of Duty is especially important because it has a large annual audience and a high retail price. Keeping the game outside Game Pass at launch could help Microsoft preserve full game sales, premium edition revenue, and other spending connected to the release.

Game Pass Still Has a Role for Older Call of Duty Titles

Game Pass remains part of Microsoft’s strategy, but it appears to be changing from a service built around immediate access to every major Xbox release into a catalogue with more delayed additions.

That could make the service more sustainable, though it may also make it less attractive for players who joined mainly for day one games. The value will depend on how quickly major releases arrive after launch and whether Xbox can keep adding strong older titles.

For Call of Duty fans, the message is simple. Modern Warfare 4 will require a standard purchase this year, whether you play on Xbox, PC, or another platform. The Game Pass version, if it arrives, will come later.
