Beyond Good & Evil 2 Reportedly Returns to Single Player Gameplay With Spider-Man Inspired Combat

Ubisoft's Beyond Good & Evil 2 has reportedly undergone another major redesign, shifting toward a story driven single player adventure with combat inspired by Insomniac's Spider-Man games.

Despite being in development since 2017, the long awaited sequel reportedly remains in preproduction. A new investigation suggests that Ubisoft has struggled to establish a consistent gameplay direction, repeatedly changing the project's structure over the years.

The latest version will reportedly prioritize solo gameplay while retaining optional cooperative features and removing mandatory online connectivity.

However, Ubisoft has not officially confirmed these changes.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 Remains in Preproduction After Years of Development

According to the report, Beyond Good & Evil 2 has not yet entered full production, despite having at least 250 developers working on it at Ubisoft Montpellier alone.

The project is currently approaching an important development milestone that could determine whether it moves into production or faces further difficulties.

Its immediate objective is to reach alpha and establish a finalized gameplay framework.

Once that milestone is completed, developers could begin focusing more extensively on producing playable content.

However, the report indicates that some team members remain concerned about the project's future, particularly amid Ubisoft's ongoing restructuring.

Ubisoft Has Repeatedly Changed Beyond Good & Evil 2 Gameplay

One of the biggest reported problems is the absence of a consistent gameplay identity.

Throughout development, Ubisoft has experimented with several multiplayer and cooperative formats.

Earlier concepts reportedly included smaller matchmaking groups, more open gameplay systems, four player teams, and eventually two player cooperation.

The latest direction moves away from multiplayer as the central experience.

The current design reportedly emphasizes narrative content alongside combat resembling the Spider-Man games.

It would also allow players to experience the adventure without maintaining an online connection.

Voyager Engine Remains a Strength Despite Uncertain Future

Although the gameplay direction remains unsettled, Beyond Good & Evil 2 reportedly has a strong technical foundation through Ubisoft's Voyager engine.

The development difficulties appear to involve project planning and creative decisions rather than a complete absence of technology.

One developer who spent six years working on the project suggested that understanding its problems would require an extensive examination of its development history.

Some employees reportedly worry that the approaching milestone could become the project's final opportunity to secure continued production.

Ubisoft has not announced a release date or confirmed a cancellation.

For now, Beyond Good & Evil 2 remains an active but uncertain project, with its next development milestone potentially determining whether the long delayed adventure finally moves into full production.
