Bang & Olufsen Restores a 1985 Turntable for a $30,000 Luxury Hi Fi System

Bang & Olufsen has introduced the Beosystem 3000c Dune Grey Edition, a limited luxury music system built around a restored 1985 Beogram 3000 turntable and a pair of Beolab 8 wireless speakers. Priced at $30,000, the system is aimed at collectors who want vintage vinyl hardware with modern streaming features and high-end design.

Only 100 individually numbered units will be made worldwide. Each system includes a certificate of authenticity and a special engraving, making it more of a collector product than a conventional home audio purchase.

The Dune Grey Edition is part of Bang & Olufsen’s Recreated Classics program, which takes original products from the company’s history and rebuilds them with updated components, finishes, and connectivity.

A 1985 turntable returns with modern upgrades

The centrepiece of the system is an original Beogram 3000 Series turntable, first released in 1985. Bang & Olufsen sources the vintage units, sends them to its Struer factory in Denmark, and has technicians take them apart, restore their components, and rebuild them by hand.

The turntable keeps its distinctive electronically controlled tangential tracking tonearm. Unlike a conventional record player arm that moves in an arc across a vinyl record, this design travels in a straight line from the outer edge toward the centre.

That movement is intended to follow the same path used when the original record master was cut. In theory, this can reduce tracking errors and unwanted distortion during playback.

The restored turntable also includes a modern high-performance phono cartridge, allowing it to work as part of a more advanced wireless audio system.

Dune Grey design replaces the original silver look

The new version changes the original turntable’s appearance with a warmer matte aluminium finish. Instead of standard silver metalwork, Bang & Olufsen uses a lightly bronzed Dune Grey tone.

The metal is paired with dark walnut lamellas across the turntable back panel and the Beolab 8 speaker accents. The company says the design takes inspiration from natural Nordic coastline textures and colours.

This focus on materials is a major reason for the product’s price. The Beosystem 3000c is designed as furniture, artwork, audio equipment, and a collector item at the same time.

For buyers who simply want a turntable and speakers, there are far more affordable ways to get excellent sound. This system is for people who value design history and limited production as much as playback quality.

Beolab 8 speakers add wireless streaming support

The package includes two Beolab 8 wireless speakers, which normally sell for $2,749 each. Each speaker uses Class D amplification and includes a tweeter, midrange driver, and woofer.

Together, the system is designed to cover a frequency range from 28Hz to 23kHz. The speakers can handle vinyl playback from the restored turntable, but they also support modern digital listening.

Supported wireless options include Wi Fi, Bluetooth 5.3, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, Apple AirPlay 2, and Google Cast.

That means owners can switch from playing records to streaming music without changing their broader audio setup.

Vintage vinyl meets modern listening habits

The Beosystem 3000c is built around a contrast that has become increasingly popular in premium audio. The turntable offers the physical ritual of vinyl, while the wireless speakers provide convenience for streaming services and digital libraries.

This approach gives the system more flexibility than a traditional analogue-only setup. It can serve as a premium vinyl system without forcing owners to give up modern audio services.

A luxury product for collectors rather than casual listeners

The $30,000 price will place the Beosystem 3000c far beyond the reach of most music fans. However, Bang & Olufsen is not targeting the regular turntable market.

The company is selling a restored piece of audio history with modern engineering, limited production, custom materials, and a strong visual identity. The value lies as much in the design and rarity as it does in technical performance.

For collectors who want a fully restored Bang & Olufsen classic with modern wireless speakers, the Dune Grey Edition offers a rare combination. For everyone else, it remains an impressive example of how far luxury audio brands can take nostalgia.
