Baldur’s Gate 2 remake is reportedly in development after Baldur’s Gate 3’s huge success

Baldur’s Gate 2 is reportedly getting a remake, giving one of the most respected Dungeons and Dragons RPGs a chance to return for a much larger modern audience. The project has reportedly been approved by Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, with Kevin Martens, one of the original game’s co lead designers, said to be involved.

The move makes sense after the success of Baldur’s Gate 3. Larian Studios turned the series into a major name again in 2023, winning Game of the Year and bringing millions of players into a franchise that many had never touched before. While longtime RPG fans still respect the original Baldur’s Gate games, the reality is that they are old, difficult for some modern players to approach, and built around older Dungeons and Dragons rules.

Baldur’s Gate 2 first launched in 2000, following the original game from 1998. Both titles remain important in RPG history, but they use a version of Dungeons and Dragons’ 2nd Edition ruleset, which can feel dated compared with the more familiar 5th Edition rules used in Baldur’s Gate 3. A proper remake could make the older story easier to understand and more enjoyable for newer players.

The report does not confirm exactly how deep the remake will go. Still, a modern Baldur’s Gate 2 would likely need more than a simple visual touch up. The 2013 Enhanced Editions already made the older games easier to play, so a new remake would probably need updated graphics, better audio, redesigned controls, and more accessible combat systems to justify itself.

One possible direction would be to rebuild the game around 5th Edition inspired mechanics, making it feel closer to Baldur’s Gate 3 while keeping the original story and characters intact. That would be a major change, but it could also help bridge the gap between old fans and new players.

The bigger question is whether the first Baldur’s Gate will also be remade. It would be strange to remake only Baldur’s Gate 2 because the first two games are more directly connected to each other than either one is to Baldur’s Gate 3. If Wizards of the Coast wants to introduce modern players to the full older saga, a remake of the first game would make sense as well.

The timing also fits the current state of the franchise. Larian has already confirmed that it is not making Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC and has moved on to its next RPG projects. That leaves Wizards of the Coast looking for ways to keep Baldur’s Gate active without Larian. A remake of Baldur’s Gate 2 would let the company build on the renewed interest while avoiding the pressure of immediately making Baldur’s Gate 4.

Kevin Martens’ reported involvement is also notable because he worked on the original Baldur’s Gate 2 and is already connected to Wizards of the Coast through Exodus, an upcoming sci fi RPG. Having someone with direct knowledge of the classic game could help the remake respect the original while still making necessary modern changes.

There is no release date yet, and the project could still be years away. Depending on how ambitious the remake is, it may arrive as early as 2027 or much later. A light remake would move faster, but a full rebuild closer to modern RPG standards would take far more time.

For now, the report is enough to excite RPG fans. Baldur’s Gate 3 proved that there is still a huge audience for deep party based roleplaying games. If Baldur’s Gate 2 is truly being remade with care, it could give newer players a proper way to experience one of the genre’s most important classics without fighting against decades old design.
