ASUS may be preparing a new ROG Ally refresh with AMD’s Z2 Extreme chip

ASUS could be getting ready to reveal a refreshed ROG Ally handheld, and the early signs point to AMD’s Z2 Extreme APU being inside. A new certification listing from South Korea’s National Radio Research Agency appears to show an upcoming ASUS handheld console PC, with a product code pattern that suggests it will use the same class of chip found in the ROG Xbox Ally X.

This does not look like a full next generation handheld yet. Based on the current evidence, it appears more likely to be a mid generation refresh of ASUS’s existing ROG Ally hardware. That would make sense. The handheld PC market has become much more competitive, and ASUS may want to update its lineup before rivals gain more ground.

The ROG Ally family has become one of the most visible alternatives to the Steam Deck. ASUS was one of the first major PC brands to push into the handheld gaming market, and its partnership with Xbox helped make the device even more prominent. With Computex approaching, a new model reveal would not be surprising.

The product code suggests a Z2 Extreme model

The main clue comes from the product code in the certification listing. According to the report, the code includes an “X” in the same position as the ROG Xbox Ally X, which uses AMD’s Z2 Extreme chip. Previous ROG Ally product codes used different letters depending on the APU, such as “L” for the Z1 Extreme and “Y” for the Z2 A.

That is not an official specification sheet, so it should still be treated as a strong clue rather than final confirmation. Certification listings often reveal hardware before companies are ready to announce it, but they usually do not include every detail people want.

Right now, there is no clear information about screen size, display type, battery capacity, RAM, storage, cooling, or price. Those details will decide whether this refresh feels meaningful or minor.

The biggest question is whether ASUS will add an OLED display. The Steam Deck OLED showed how much a better screen can improve a handheld even without a huge performance jump. If ASUS combines a Z2 Extreme chip with OLED, improved battery life, and better thermals, the refresh could feel much more appealing.

More RAM would also help. Handheld PCs rely on shared system memory, and newer games can be demanding. If ASUS wants this model to feel more future ready, memory capacity and bandwidth will matter almost as much as the APU.

Price may be the hardest part. Gaming hardware costs have been rising, and handheld PCs are no exception. The Steam Deck recently became much more expensive in some regions, which has made devices like the ROG Ally look more competitive. But if ASUS launches a new model at a high price, it will need clear upgrades to justify the cost.

A Z2 Extreme refresh could still make sense if ASUS keeps it focused. The original ROG Ally showed there is demand for a Windows based handheld with strong performance, while the ROG Xbox Ally X added more polish and Xbox focused appeal. A refreshed ASUS branded model could sit between those audiences.

For now, the listing mainly tells us that ASUS likely has another handheld on the way, and AMD’s Z2 Extreme looks like the chip to watch. The real test will be whether ASUS uses this refresh to fix the things players care about most: display quality, battery life, comfort, software, and price.
