ASUS launches ROG Strix XG27UCMG triple mode gaming monitor with up to 488Hz refresh rate

ASUS has introduced the ROG Strix XG27UCMG, its first triple mode gaming monitor, giving players three different resolution and refresh rate options on one display. The monitor uses a 27 inch Fast IPS panel and is aimed at gamers who want flexibility between sharper image quality and higher refresh rates.

Triple mode monitors are starting to appear more often as display makers look beyond the earlier dual mode format. MSI recently showed a triple mode QD OLED model with refresh rates reaching up to 680Hz, while GIGABYTE also entered the space with a 5K Mini LED monitor. ASUS is taking a different path with the ROG Strix XG27UCMG by using Fast IPS rather than OLED or Mini LED, which suggests the company may be targeting a more balanced price range.

The main attraction is the ability to switch between 4K, 1440p, and 1080p modes depending on the game. At 4K, the monitor supports up to 240Hz, which is already fast enough for many high end gaming setups. This mode is best suited for visually rich games where sharpness and detail matter more than reaching the absolute highest refresh rate.

The monitor gives players separate modes for sharp visuals and competitive speed

The second mode runs at 2K, or 1440p, with a refresh rate of up to 400Hz through overclocking. This may end up being the most practical mode for many players because it gives a cleaner image than 1080p while still offering extremely fast motion. For people who play both single player games and competitive titles, 1440p at 400Hz gives the monitor its strongest middle ground.

The third mode drops the resolution to Full HD and raises the refresh rate to up to 488Hz through overclocking. This is aimed at competitive players who care most about motion clarity and input response. Games such as shooters and esports titles are the clearest fit for this mode, especially when the system can push very high frame rates.

For connectivity, the ROG Strix XG27UCMG includes DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.1. These ports should support the monitor’s listed modes, although DisplayPort 2.1 would have been a better fit for anyone hoping for more bandwidth at higher resolutions with fewer compromises. The monitor also includes a USB Type C port, which may support display input or device charging, though ASUS has not fully detailed that part yet.

The use of Fast IPS is also important. OLED panels still have advantages in contrast and response time, but Fast IPS can offer strong motion performance while helping ASUS keep the monitor away from the highest price tier. It also avoids some OLED concerns, such as burn in, which may matter to people who use the same screen for both gaming and desktop work.

ASUS has not confirmed pricing or availability yet. That will decide how competitive the ROG Strix XG27UCMG really is. If it arrives at a reasonable price, it could appeal to gamers who want one monitor for several types of play instead of choosing between a sharp 4K display and a very fast esports screen.

For now, the ROG Strix XG27UCMG looks like ASUS’s answer to the growing triple mode monitor trend. It gives you 4K 240Hz for visual detail, 1440p 400Hz for balance, and 1080p 488Hz for speed, all in one 27 inch Fast IPS display.
