Asus keeps older Intel chip alive in new TUF Gaming 16 laptop

Asus has refreshed its TUF Gaming 16 laptop for 2026, but the upgrade is not as modern as some buyers may expect. Instead of moving the gaming laptop to Intel’s latest Core Ultra Series 2 or Series 3 processors, Asus is sticking with an older Raptor Lake HX chip and pairing it with Nvidia’s newer GeForce RTX 5070 laptop GPU.

The new TUF Gaming 16 uses the Intel Core i7 14650HX, a Raptor Lake Refresh processor. That means Asus is not using Arrow Lake or Panther Lake in this gaming model, even though newer Intel chips are now appearing in other laptops. The decision suggests Asus still sees Raptor Lake HX as a strong fit for gaming laptops where raw CPU power, proven performance, and familiar thermal behavior may matter more than using the newest platform.

The GPU side is more current. Asus is pairing the older Intel processor with Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 5070 laptop graphics. That gives the system a newer gaming foundation, especially for players who care more about GPU performance than CPU branding. In most modern games, the graphics chip will matter more than the processor once settings and resolution are pushed higher.

The rest of the TUF Gaming 16 appears familiar. Asus is keeping the classic TUF Gaming design, an anti fingerprint coating on the keyboard deck, and the same general rugged styling that the series is known for. The laptop also includes dual RAM and SSD slots, with memory support going up to 64GB of DDR5.

Cooling is handled by a three heat pipe system and dual 80 blade fans. Asus says the cooling setup keeps noise under 40 dBA, which is important for a gaming laptop that needs to balance performance and comfort. The TUF series is not usually about luxury design. It is about durable gaming hardware at a more practical price point, so keeping noise controlled matters.

The lack of a major redesign may disappoint people who wanted a bigger jump over the 2025 model. If the same CPU and GPU combination, similar memory and storage options, and familiar design return, this refresh may feel more like a continuation than a full new generation.

Still, the choice may be practical. Raptor Lake HX chips remain powerful, and many laptop makers appear comfortable using them in gaming machines. Arrow Lake has not always been the obvious upgrade for every performance laptop, while Panther Lake seems better suited for thinner and more premium portable devices. Asus appears to be separating its strategy by product category.

That is clearer with the ExpertBook B5 Flip G2. Unlike the TUF Gaming 16, the new business convertible does get Intel’s newer Panther Lake platform, also known as Intel Core 7 Series 3. It includes an NPU rated up to 18 TOPS and built in Intel Xe3 based Arc graphics. This makes more sense for a lightweight productivity laptop where battery life, AI features, and portability matter more than raw gaming performance.

The ExpertBook B5 Flip G2 also has a 360 degree convertible design, a touch display, dual cameras, and a military grade chassis. It is built for hybrid work, study, video calls, note taking, and portable productivity rather than heavy gaming.

Asus’s Computex lineup therefore shows two different approaches. For gaming, the company is relying on a proven older Intel HX chip with a newer Nvidia GPU. For productivity, it is moving to Panther Lake and newer integrated graphics.

The TUF Gaming 16 may not be exciting on paper, but it could still make sense if pricing is competitive. Gamers often care more about frame rates, thermals, upgrade options, and GPU power than whether the CPU is the newest generation. If Asus keeps the cost reasonable, the older Core i7 14650HX may not hurt the laptop much.

The bigger question is value. A 2026 gaming laptop with an older processor needs to justify itself through price, cooling, build quality, and RTX 5070 performance. If Asus gets those parts right, the TUF Gaming 16 can still be a sensible gaming machine. If the price is too high, buyers may look for newer CPU platforms instead.
