Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Brings PSSR 2.0 and Ray Tracing Features to PS5 Pro

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced will give PlayStation 5 Pro owners improved image quality and more advanced ray tracing when it launches on July 9, 2026. Ubisoft has confirmed that the remake will support PSSR 2.0, ray traced specular reflections, and ray traced global illumination across its available graphics modes on Sony’s upgraded console.

The new version rebuilds Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag using the latest Anvil engine technology while keeping the original pirate adventure and Edward Kenway’s story at its center. Ubisoft says the goal was to modernize the game without losing the exploration, atmosphere, and sense of discovery that made the original popular.

Along with visual improvements, Black Flag Resynced will include HDR, Dolby Atmos support, DualSense haptic feedback, and several performance options for console players.

PS5 and PS5 Pro Will Offer Three Graphics Modes

Both PlayStation 5 consoles will provide Performance, Fidelity, and Balanced modes. All three are designed to output at an upscaled 4K resolution, but each mode targets a different frame rate.

Performance mode aims for 60 FPS, Fidelity mode targets 30 FPS, and Balanced mode is designed for 40 FPS. The choice will allow you to prioritize smoother gameplay, improved image quality, or a middle ground between the two.

Graphics modeResolution targetFrame rate targetBest for
PerformanceUpscaled 4K60 FPSFaster gameplay and responsive controls
BalancedUpscaled 4K40 FPSA compromise between visual quality and smoothness
FidelityUpscaled 4K30 FPSHigher visual detail and cinematic presentation

The core frame rate options are similar on both PS5 and PS5 Pro. The larger difference comes from how each console handles the game’s ray traced effects.

PS5 Pro Gets More Advanced Ray Tracing Features

Ray tracing is used to improve how light and reflections behave in the game world. In Black Flag Resynced, this includes ray traced global illumination, which affects indirect lighting across locations, ships, interiors, and outdoor environments.

The game will also use ray traced specular reflections. These can improve reflections on water, polished surfaces, metal objects, and other materials that benefit from more accurate light behavior.

PS5 Pro owners will receive a stronger implementation of these features than players using the standard PS5. Ubisoft has also confirmed PSSR 2.0 support, which should help the system create a cleaner upscaled 4K image while maintaining performance.

PSSR 2.0 is particularly important in games that combine high resolution output with demanding effects such as ray tracing. Better reconstruction can reduce visible softness and instability without requiring the console to render every pixel natively at 4K.

Ubisoft Rebuilt Black Flag on a Newer Anvil Engine

Ubisoft says Black Flag Resynced has been rebuilt from the ground up with a newer version of its Anvil engine. The update covers more than a visual refresh, with modernized systems intended to improve the overall experience on current hardware.

The original Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag was released during the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 era, then later arrived on newer consoles. Its open sea exploration, naval combat, island environments, and pirate setting remain some of the most remembered parts of the Assassin’s Creed series.

The remake gives Ubisoft an opportunity to update those systems for modern consoles while also improving lighting, sound, responsiveness, and environmental detail.

Black Flag Resynced Launches in July

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC on July 9, 2026. The PS5 Pro version appears to be the strongest console option for players who want the game’s higher quality ray tracing features and improved image reconstruction.

The remaining question is how closely the real world performance matches Ubisoft’s targets once the game is available. For now, the confirmed PS5 Pro features suggest that Black Flag Resynced will be one of Ubisoft’s more ambitious current generation console remakes.
