Against AMD's $359 MSRP, the saving is $64, or the 18% Amazon shows on the listing. The price held across two separate checks of the listing, and Amazon marks the processor as in stock.
What the Ryzen 7 9700X offers for $294.99
The Ryzen 7 9700X is an 8-core, 16-thread desktop processor built on AMD's Zen 5 architecture. AMD rates it at a 3.8GHz base clock, up to 5.5GHz boost, and 40MB of combined L2 and L3 cache.
Why it matters: the chip runs at a 65W default TDP, so it suits a quiet mid-range gaming build that does not need a large power supply. It drops into the AM5 socket and supports DDR5 memory and PCIe 5.0.

Two details matter for builders. The chip has basic integrated graphics, so it can drive a display without a graphics card while you troubleshoot a new build.
Memory speed also depends on how many sticks you use. AMD lists DDR5-5600 with two modules, but only DDR5-3600 when all four slots are filled.
Budget for a cooler, and a note on the 105W mode
AMD does not put a cooler in the box, and the Amazon listing says the same. AMD recommends a premium air cooler for optimal performance, so the real cost of this upgrade is $294.99 plus a cooler.
It has been reported that a later motherboard firmware update added an optional 105W mode for the 9700X, which reportedly lifts its power limit and mainly helps multi-threaded work. AMD's product page lists only the 65W default TDP, so treat the higher mode as reported rather than an official spec.
Firmware matters on Ryzen 9000 boards for other reasons too, as the recent MSI BIOS update for Ryzen 9000 memory support showed. Updating the board before installing the chip is a sensible first step.

The most awkward rival is the Ryzen 9 9900X at $337.95. It adds four cores and a 5.6GHz boost for $43 more, although Amazon shows only seven units in stock.
For a tighter budget, the Ryzen 5 9600X at $175.50 keeps Zen 5 with six cores, and Digital Citizen tracked it falling to $176 in June. The Ryzen 7 7800X3D costs $54 more and trades Zen 5 for a much larger 96MB L3 cache.
The older Ryzen 5 7600X at $163.00 is the cheapest AM5 chip here. Amazon also lists a Micro Center bundle pairing a Ryzen 5 7600X3D with an ASUS B650E motherboard for $398.99, which covers the board as well.
Is the Ryzen 7 9700X deal worth it
At $294.99, the 9700X costs less on Amazon than on AMD's own store, and it keeps the 65W default TDP that makes it easy to cool and power. The 9900X is the harder question, because $43 buys 50% more cores.
Amazon does not say when this price ends, and no official price history is published, so it cannot be called a record low. The cost of a cooler comes on top, and prices can change at any time.
