IO Interactive’s first major game outside Hitman in more than a decade is already a commercial success. 007 First Light has sold 1.5 million copies in less than 24 hours after launch, giving the studio a strong start for its new James Bond era and proving that its reputation can carry beyond Agent 47.
That is a major milestone for IO Interactive. The studio has spent years being known almost entirely as the Hitman developer. Its last non Hitman release came from the Kane and Lynch series back in 2010. Since then, IO has built its identity around stealth, assassination sandboxes, careful level design, and player freedom.
A James Bond game always looked like a natural fit for the studio. Hitman already had stylish locations, disguise systems, stealth, gadgets, and social infiltration. Those ideas map well onto Bond. But a good match on paper does not guarantee a hit. Licensed games can be risky, especially when fans already have strong expectations from decades of films and older Bond games.
IO Interactive may have found a second major franchise
The early sales show that players were ready for a serious Bond game again. 007 First Light is also getting strong critical attention, with Wccftech giving it an 8.5 out of 10 and calling it one of the greatest James Bond games ever made.

The game is being praised for mixing linear and open ended levels with a strong story. That sounds like the exact balance IO needed. Too much freedom could make Bond feel like Hitman in a tuxedo. Too much linear action could lose what makes IO’s design special. If First Light lands between those two ideas, it gives the studio a strong foundation for future Bond games.

The timing also makes the success interesting. 2026 is already packed with major releases, and Grand Theft Auto VI is expected to dominate the conversation later this year. But games like 007 First Light, Forza Horizon 6, Resident Evil Requiem, and Mina the Hollower are making the Game of the Year discussion more competitive than expected.
The future of IO’s Bond may now depend on what Amazon MGM wants to do with the broader franchise. Historically, Bond games and other projects often had to follow the film actor. But with Amazon MGM now controlling the IP, there may be more room for IO’s version of Bond, played by Patrick Gibson, to continue separately from the next movie era.
That would be good news for players. First Light’s credits reportedly tease that James Bond will return, so IO clearly wants to keep building this world. If the studio is allowed to continue with the same version of Bond, it could develop a proper game continuity instead of starting over whenever the films change direction.
The sales number makes that more likely. Selling 1.5 million copies in one day gives IO Interactive and Amazon MGM a strong reason to treat this as more than a one off licensed release.
For IO, this is also a creative win. The studio needed to show it could do more than Hitman without losing the strengths that made Hitman great. 007 First Light appears to have done exactly that. It has given James Bond a successful return to games and given IO Interactive a second major identity to build on.
