Winhanced Ships Its Last Big Pre-1.0 Patch for Windows Handhelds, Then Two Hotfixes

Winhanced, the controller-first shell that Windows handheld owners can run instead of the Xbox app, shipped version 0.9.9.9 on September 27, 2026. It is the last large feature drop of the 0.9 line, and the one that turns the app into a destination rather than a launcher.

The headline addition is the Winhanced Streaming Companion, a separate app installed on a gaming PC. That PC's games then appear in the handheld library with a cloud icon, ready to stream.

Winhanced says the Companion installs and configures the streaming app itself, so nothing has to be paired by hand. It can also wake the PC when a game starts.

What version 0.9.9.9 changed

Windows updates now install from inside the app. Settings has an Update Center section that sorts them the way Windows does, by Feature, Quality, Driver and Definition, with each one showing its size.

The project's own patch notes are blunt about the limit there. "Winhanced never restarts your device for you."

Per-game profiles were split three ways. Each game now keeps separate settings for battery, plugged in and an external graphics card, and that includes the game's own graphics settings.

Epic and GOG downloads can resume where they stopped, pull only what changed in an update, and repair a broken install. Handhelds also gained a battery charge limit and graphics memory controls.

Friend cards stopped being a supporter perk. Messaging, status and profile panels across Discord, Steam, Xbox and PlayStation moved to the free build, as did Favorites.

Two hotfixes landed within five days

Version 0.9.9.91 followed on September 30, 2026, and 0.9.9.92 on October 2, 2026. The latter is the current build.

The first hotfix made devices repair themselves after sleep. If a controller, fan or power setting stops responding, the app reconnects and restores the settings without a restart.

The second cleaned up after the first. Game theme music had broken because 0.9.9.91 shipped without a tool it needed, and 0.9.9.92 restored it.

That build also added in-app bug reporting with a ticket number, an offline copy of the FAQ, and private logs that only Winhanced support can read. A native Spanish speaker rewrote more than 270 lines of the interface.

So "final" here means final before version 1.0, not the end of the project. The download page lists 26 releases and a live installer, and no 1.0 date has been published.

Where Microsoft's own Xbox mode fits

Microsoft calls its version Xbox mode, or the full screen experience. Its support page describes "a console inspired, dedicated gaming experience that gives players a controller-optimized way to navigate and play on Windows".

That page also says Xbox mode requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or later and is only available in supported markets. Microsoft said the feature reached Windows 11 handhelds in market on November 24, 2025.

Wider PC coverage is slower. Microsoft said on April 30, 2026 that Xbox mode would begin rolling out to laptops, desktops and tablets "in select markets", expanding "over the next several weeks".

The interesting part is that Microsoft built a door for apps like this one. Its own settings include a Choose home app option that accepts any supported gaming home app on the device.

Winhanced registers itself in that list a few seconds after launch, with no toggle to find, and sits next to the Xbox app in Windows Settings. The platform feature is the hook it uses, not the thing replacing it, which is why the console-style shell is still worth running.

Devices, requirements and what it switches off

Winhanced needs Windows 11 build 22000 or newer. Windows 10 is not supported, and there is no ARM64 build.

Full hardware control, meaning power limits, fan curves, lighting and paddle remapping, covers the Legion Go family, the ROG Ally and ROG Xbox Ally models, and four MSI Claw variants. The Steam Deck, OneXfly, OneXPlayer, GPD and AYANEO devices get the library, sleep and a generic power slider instead.

Winhanced lists its own gaps. Its documentation says the power limit "is not landing on the OneXPlayer 3", and that it will not guess at firmware protocols because wrong values can brick a controller.

The real caveat is what installing it does to vendor software. On supported hardware Winhanced stops Armoury Crate, Legion Space or MSI Center M, along with their services, because two apps cannot own the same fans and lighting.

The published guidance is to turn device control off before uninstalling. "The app that knows how to put your OEM software back is the one you're removing."

Beyond that, the honest risks are structural. The app is closed source with no public repository, it is built by a two-person team funded through Patreon, and a shell layered on top of Windows can break when Windows changes underneath it. No support window for the 0.9 branch has been published, and the current build is free with no account required.
