Valve Code Hints at Possible OLED Steam Frame With Foveated Scaling

Valve may be experimenting with an OLED version of the Steam Frame, according to references discovered in recently published kernel source code for the VR device.

The evidence is not an official product announcement, and there is no confirmation that Valve plans to release the hardware. However, references to a device called “Plano” appear connected to an older development branch named “deckard-oled.”

Deckard was previously used as a codename for the Steam Frame, which has led to speculation that Plano could represent an OLED variant currently being tested internally.

Plano References Point to an OLED Steam Frame

The references appeared after Valve published the Steam Frame kernel source code, which was later mirrored to GitHub.

Within that code, Plano appears linked to the older deckard-oled branch.

That naming is the strongest indication that the project could involve an OLED display, although code references alone do not prove that the device will become a commercial product.

Valve has not announced Plano publicly or provided a release window.

Code Mentions a 3552 × 3840 Resolution

The kernel references also include a resolution of 3552 × 3840.

The report interprets this as corresponding to a default resolution of 1776 × 1920, although the exact display configuration is not confirmed.

A 1.5x global scaling mode is also mentioned.

Higher scaling could improve image sharpness by rendering at a greater internal resolution, but it would also increase the GPU workload.

That type of option could be particularly useful for a VR headset where visual clarity is closely tied to rendering resolution.

Foveated Scaling Could Reduce Performance Costs

Another interesting reference is Foveated Scaling.

The technique could work alongside foveated rendering, where the system concentrates more rendering resources on the part of the image the player is directly looking at.

Areas outside the center of vision can be rendered at a lower pixel density because they are less noticeable to the eye.

This approach can reduce bandwidth and processing requirements while preserving perceived image quality.

According to the code references, the possible OLED panel may be able to scale and render sections of the incoming video signal directly in hardware.

If that implementation works as described, it could reduce the amount of work required from the GPU.

OLED Could Offer More Than Better Contrast

An OLED Steam Frame would naturally bring the usual display advantages associated with OLED technology, including deeper blacks and stronger contrast.

However, the more interesting part of the leak is the possibility that the display hardware itself could contribute to foveated scaling.

That could make the panel an active part of the performance optimization process rather than simply a higher quality replacement for the existing display.

The effectiveness would depend on Valve's implementation and whether the feature works reliably with the Steam Frame's eye tracking and rendering pipeline.

The Evidence Is Still Highly Preliminary

There is no indication that an OLED Steam Frame is close to release.

Internal codenames and development branches can refer to prototypes, abandoned experiments or hardware that never reaches consumers.

Plano could therefore represent a research platform rather than a finished second Steam Frame model.

Valve has also not announced pricing, specifications or a launch schedule for any OLED revision.

The original Steam Frame itself is still relatively new, making an immediate hardware refresh unlikely based on the information currently available.

For now, the kernel references suggest that Valve has at least explored an OLED configuration with higher resolution options and foveated scaling. Whether Plano becomes a commercial Steam Frame model remains unconfirmed.
