Train Sim World will no longer receive new games or downloadable content on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, with future releases moving exclusively to Xbox Series X and Series S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
The change affects new Train Sim World titles and add ons developed from this point onward. Existing copies of Train Sim World 6 and previously purchased content will remain available, playable, and supported on older consoles.
Dovetail Games said the move will give its development teams more freedom to use current generation hardware, improve visual quality, and target stronger performance without working around the technical limits of systems released more than a decade ago.
Players who want future routes, trains, expansions, and later entries in the series will need to move to a supported console or PC.
Existing Xbox One and PS4 content will continue working
The decision does not remove Train Sim World 6 or its current downloadable content from older systems.
Anything already purchased before the cutoff will remain attached to your account and should continue working on the original hardware. The restriction applies only to content developed after the announcement and future games in the series.
| Platform | Existing content | Future add ons and games |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox One | Remains playable and supported | No longer supported |
| PlayStation 4 | Remains playable and supported | No longer supported |
| Xbox Series X and Series S | Supported | Supported |
| PlayStation 5 | Supported | Supported |
| Steam | Supported | Supported |
| Xbox app for PC | Supported | Supported |
| Epic Games Store | Supported | Supported |
This means older console owners are not losing access to anything they already own. However, their current library will stop expanding once all previously planned content has been released.
Xbox players have several upgrade options
Xbox One players have more flexibility than PlayStation 4 owners because Train Sim World 6 supports Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming.
If you move from Xbox One to Xbox Series X or Series S, your compatible purchases should carry forward through the same Xbox account. Existing content can also transfer to the Xbox app on PC through Play Anywhere.
That transfer does not extend to Steam or the Epic Games Store. Content purchased through Xbox remains within Microsoft’s ecosystem.
| Xbox transition | Existing content transfers |
|---|---|
| Xbox One to Xbox Series X or Series S | Yes |
| Xbox One to Xbox app on PC | Yes, through Play Anywhere |
| Xbox One to Steam | No |
| Xbox One to Epic Games Store | No |
| Xbox One through Xbox Cloud Gaming | Available for supported content |
Xbox Cloud Gaming provides another route for players who cannot immediately buy a newer console or gaming PC. Train Sim World 6 can be streamed on compatible devices, allowing older Xbox owners to continue playing without running the game locally.
Cloud access still depends on a suitable subscription, supported region, and stable internet connection.
PlayStation 4 players can carry purchases to PS5
PlayStation 4 owners can move their existing Train Sim World content to PlayStation 5.
Unlike Xbox One players, they cannot use cloud streaming on the older console to access the PS5 version. PlayStation cloud streaming for the game is limited to owners using supported current generation hardware.

This leaves a physical PS5 upgrade as the main route for PlayStation players who want future Train Sim World releases while keeping their existing purchases.
The announcement does not mention cross platform ownership, so PlayStation purchases cannot be transferred to Xbox or PC.
Current hardware gives developers more freedom
Train simulation games can place heavy demands on processors, memory, and storage.
Large routes may contain detailed stations, scenery, signalling systems, traffic, passengers, weather effects, and complex train physics. Supporting Xbox One and PlayStation 4 requires developers to keep those systems within the limits of older hardware.
Moving to current platforms should allow Dovetail Games and its partners to create more detailed environments and improve performance without maintaining separate versions built around weaker specifications.
| Development area | Possible benefit of ending older console support |
|---|---|
| Route detail | Denser scenery and more complex environments |
| Train models | Higher quality interiors and exterior details |
| Performance | More stable frame rates |
| Memory use | Larger routes and more active systems |
| Loading | Better use of faster storage |
| Visual effects | Improved lighting, weather, and shadows |
The company has not announced specific new features made possible by the change. The benefits will depend on how future games and add ons use the additional resources.
Train Sim World 6 remains usable on older consoles
Xbox One and PlayStation 4 players can continue using Train Sim World 6 as it exists today.
Previously released routes, locomotives, scenarios, and other owned content will not stop functioning because of the platform change. Support for existing releases will also continue, although the announcement does not define how long technical updates will be provided.
Players who are satisfied with their current collection do not need to upgrade immediately.
The impact will be greater for people who regularly purchase new routes or intend to follow the series into its next release. Those players will eventually need an Xbox Series console, PlayStation 5, or compatible PC.
Rising console prices make the timing difficult
The transition arrives while newer Xbox and PlayStation hardware has become more expensive in several regions.
That makes the upgrade more difficult for players who have stayed on older systems because of cost. The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 still have large software libraries, and many owners continue using them for games that do not require current hardware.
Train Sim World has supported those platforms longer than many other major series. Even Call of Duty is moving beyond Xbox One and PlayStation 4 with its upcoming releases.
Dovetail Games’ decision reflects a wider industry shift as developers increasingly stop building new games around hardware from the previous generation.
Train Sim World 6 will remain playable on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, but its future content will continue elsewhere. Xbox owners can move their purchases to newer Xbox hardware or the Xbox app on PC, while PlayStation owners can carry their content to PS5. For players who remain on older consoles, the existing game will continue working, but no new journeys will be added.
