Squadron 42 Steam Page Goes Live as 2027 Launch Draws Closer

Squadron 42 has taken another step toward release, with its Steam page now live alongside a new trailer showing off the single player campaign, space battles, ground combat and its large celebrity cast.

The campaign is currently targeting a second quarter 2027 launch after being delayed from its previous 2026 window. The developers previously said the shift was intended in part to avoid launching around the same period as Grand Theft Auto VI.

Players can now add Squadron 42 to their Steam wishlists, while the game also remains listed through the developer's own storefront.

Squadron 42 Will Focus on a 30 to 40 Hour Story Campaign

Unlike Star Citizen's persistent multiplayer universe, Squadron 42 is designed as a single player campaign.

You begin as a rookie serving in the Navy of a human empire just as a major conflict with an alien force begins.

The story will move across several environments, including fighter cockpits, capital ships, space stations, military outposts and active battlefields.

Player decisions, combat and interactions with crew members are expected to shape the progression of the campaign as your character earns rank and builds a reputation.

Gameplay will mix several styles rather than focusing entirely on spacecraft.

The new trailer shows both on foot combat and space sequences, while puzzle solving will also form part of the campaign.

Celebrity Cast Includes Mark Hamill and Henry Cavill

One of Squadron 42's most prominent features is its cast.

The game includes performances from Gillian Anderson, Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Liam Cunningham, Mark Strong, John Rhys-Davies, Henry Cavill and Andy Serkis.

These actors appear throughout the campaign as members of the military and other characters involved in the larger conflict.

The new trailer puts substantial emphasis on the cast while also showing large scale cinematic sequences and action.

Steam System Requirements Are Already Listed

The Steam page includes preliminary minimum hardware requirements, although these may still change before launch.

The current listing calls for Windows 11 and a quad core processor. Intel requirements mention an i7 from the Sandy Bridge generation or newer, while AMD support begins with Bulldozer or later.

Players will also need 16 GB of RAM and a DirectX 11.1 compatible graphics card with at least 8 GB of VRAM.

DirectX 12 is listed as required, along with a broadband internet connection and 150 GB of available storage.

Given how far the release still is, these requirements should not necessarily be treated as final.

Existing Backers May Still Use the RSI Launcher

One question that remains unanswered is how existing supporters will access the game once the Steam version launches.

Many early backers already have Squadron 42 access attached to their accounts through the developer's existing ecosystem.

It is not yet clear whether those players will receive Steam keys.

The more likely arrangement is that existing customers continue using the RSI Launcher, while the Steam release primarily serves new buyers, although that has not been officially confirmed.

Star Citizen Funding Has Passed $1 Billion

Squadron 42 is emerging from the much larger Star Citizen project, which passed $1 billion in crowdfunding earlier in 2026.

While the single player campaign is moving toward a defined release window, Star Citizen itself remains under active development and continues receiving alpha updates for backers.

That makes Squadron 42 the first major part of the project positioned for a conventional full release.

With a Steam storefront now active, a new trailer released and a Q2 2027 target in place, the campaign appears to be moving closer to launch after years of development and repeated delays.
