SpaceX’s Starlink and Airtel Africa have announced a partnership to bring Direct-to-Cell satellite connectivity to Airtel customers across the operator’s 14 African markets. The goal is to extend basic mobile coverage into remote areas where building traditional cell towers can prove difficult or too costly.

Satellite connectivity without cell towers

Starlink Direct-to-Cell aims to let compatible standard smartphones connect directly to low-Earth-orbit satellites, reducing reliance on nearby terrestrial towers for coverage in hard-to-reach locations. The companies position the service as an additional layer that complements Airtel’s existing mobile network footprint.

In the initial rollout phase, the service will focus on text messaging and limited data use cases, including select messaging apps. This first step targets coverage gaps where users often experience “no signal” conditions outside towns and main transport corridors.

Launch timeline and regulatory approvals

The companies expect the first deployments to start in 2026, subject to regulatory approvals in each country. Airtel Africa will work through local licensing and spectrum requirements before customers can access the satellite-to-mobile service.

The partnership also points to a next phase using Starlink’s newer Direct-to-Cell capabilities, which the companies say should unlock faster performance and broader use cases over time. As those satellites come online, the service roadmap could expand beyond basic messaging to wider data access and other mobile services.

Airtel Africa operates in 14 markets and serves a large subscriber base across the continent. By pairing satellite coverage with its existing terrestrial network, Airtel can target underserved rural regions while also improving resilience in areas that face frequent outages or infrastructure constraints.
