Samsung and LG have unveiled early previews of Micro RGB TV technology, positioning it as the next major evolution in premium televisions beyond OLED. Both companies presented prototype displays that focus on higher brightness, improved efficiency, and longer panel lifespan.
A new direction for self-emissive displays
Micro RGB TVs use self-emissive red, green, and blue subpixels, rather than relying on white OLED layers and color filters. Each pixel produces its own color and light, which improves color accuracy and removes the need for brightness-boosting tricks common in current OLED panels.
The approach aims to keep OLED’s pixel-level contrast while solving its biggest limitations at high brightness levels.
Samsung targets brightness and durability
Samsung presented Micro RGB as a display technology that narrows the gap between OLED and MicroLED. The company highlighted higher sustained brightness, improved energy efficiency, and reduced burn-in risk compared to traditional OLED panels.
Samsung also stressed that Micro RGB could deliver near-OLED black levels while maintaining performance consistency over longer usage periods. The company framed the technology as a practical step toward MicroLED-level durability without the extreme manufacturing costs.
LG frames Micro RGB as OLED’s evolution
LG positioned Micro RGB as a direct extension of its OLED expertise. LG focused on improved color precision at high luminance, thinner panel designs, and better power efficiency for large-screen TVs.
LG claims Micro RGB maintains OLED’s core strengths, such as perfect blacks and pixel-level control, while expanding performance headroom for brighter HDR content.
Why Micro RGB matters
OLED still leads in contrast and image quality, but it struggles with sustained brightness and long-term wear. MicroLED solves those issues but remains expensive and difficult to scale for consumer TVs.
Micro RGB aims to sit between the two:
- OLED-like contrast and viewing angles
- Higher peak and sustained brightness
- Lower burn-in risk
- Better efficiency for large displays
This balance makes Micro RGB attractive for future flagship TVs.
Availability and next steps
Samsung and LG both described Micro RGB as pre-commercial technology. Neither company announced release timelines or pricing. Industry watchers expect early Micro RGB models to debut as ultra-premium TVs before reaching wider adoption.
If manufacturing scales as planned, Micro RGB could define the next generation of high-end televisions later this decade, reshaping the market segment currently dominated by OLED.
