Nvidia has released a free interactive demo on Steam to celebrate the 20th anniversary of its GeForce 8800 GTX graphics card, allowing PC enthusiasts to revisit the hardware and gaming environment of 2006.
The experience, titled GeForce 8800 GTX: 20 Years of a Legend, recreates a gaming room from that period using modern graphics technology.
Developed in collaboration with Unreal Engine artist Dylan Browne, the demo combines nostalgic PC hardware with advanced rendering features, including path tracing, ray reconstruction and DLSS 4.5.
Although the original graphics card launched in 2006, the anniversary experience requires considerably more powerful hardware than the GPU it celebrates.
GeForce 8800 GTX Demo Recreates a Gaming PC From 2006
The demo places you inside a virtual gaming room filled with computers, accessories and references to Nvidia's earlier products.
You can unbox a GeForce 8800 GTX, examine its design and install it inside a computer tower recreated to match the hardware available in 2006.
After completing the installation, the virtual PC boots into Windows Vista, including its familiar startup sound.

The room also contains several references to Nvidia's history, including posters featuring classic technology demonstrations such as Froggy, Cascades and Adrianne.
Other recognizable components include the TNT2, GeForce 2 and GeForce 6800 Ultra graphics cards, alongside an Nvidia nForce 680i motherboard.
These details recreate the period when the GeForce 8800 GTX helped introduce DirectX 10 graphics and Nvidia's CUDA computing technology.
Modern RTX Hardware Is Required to Run the Demo
Despite its historical setting, the anniversary experience uses demanding modern rendering techniques.
Nvidia has included path tracing, Mega Geometry, ray reconstruction and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation to improve the visual presentation.
The company recommends the following hardware:
| Component | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Graphics card | RTX 4070 minimum recommendation |
| Memory | 32GB RAM |
| Processor | Quad core CPU |
| Optimal graphics card | RTX 5080 |
The listed requirements focus on Nvidia hardware. AMD graphics cards are not mentioned, leaving their compatibility uncertain.
The demo is available free on Steam and focuses on exploration and hardware interaction rather than conventional gameplay.
For enthusiasts familiar with early DirectX 10 gaming, it offers an opportunity to revisit an influential graphics card through modern rendering technology.
It also provides a comparison between the hardware capabilities of 2006 and the graphical techniques available on contemporary RTX systems.
