No Man’s Sky has reached its tenth anniversary, with Hello Games revealing that the game recorded its strongest player numbers since launch during 2026.
The space exploration game first launched on August 9, 2016 and has changed considerably over the past decade. Hello Games says it has now released 40 major updates, all offered for free, while expanding the game across most major gaming platforms.
The studio also teased its next update, called COSMOS, while confirming that development continues on its upcoming fantasy game Light No Fire.

No Man’s Sky has added a long list of systems since its original release, including base building, settlements, exocraft, mechs, pets, living ships, expeditions and extensive ship customization.
The game has also been rebuilt and expanded several times as Hello Games continued modifying its procedural universe.
Support has gradually expanded to newer hardware as well, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles, virtual reality platforms and Nintendo Switch 2.
2026 delivered the strongest player numbers since launch
One of the more surprising details from the anniversary update is that No Man’s Sky reached its highest player numbers since its original release this year.
That is unusual for a game that has now been available for a decade.
Hello Games says tens of millions of people have played No Man’s Sky, accumulating hundreds of millions of hours across its universe.
Despite that activity, less than 1% of the game's procedurally generated planets have reportedly been discovered.
The scale of the universe therefore remains one of its defining characteristics even after years of exploration.
The studio also highlighted the performance of the Voyagers update, which brought in more players than any period since the original launch.
No Man’s Sky has additionally received recognition for its continued development, including awards for its evolving game support.
COSMOS is the next major update
Hello Games has confirmed that another major update is already being prepared.

It is currently known as COSMOS, although the studio has not revealed what new systems or content it will introduce.
Given the history of No Man’s Sky updates, COSMOS could potentially involve another substantial change to exploration, planets, ships or multiplayer systems, but there are no confirmed details yet.
The studio has repeatedly expanded areas that were already considered complete, so the tenth anniversary is clearly not being treated as the end of active development.
That continued support has become central to the game's identity.
Light No Fire remains in development
Hello Games also provided a brief update on Light No Fire.
The upcoming game remains in development alongside continued work on No Man’s Sky.
Light No Fire takes a different direction by focusing on a fantasy world rather than an enormous science fiction universe. The project has been described as an online multiplayer sandbox built around a planet sized environment.
The studio has not announced a release date.
The anniversary message makes it clear that Hello Games is dividing its efforts between completing Light No Fire and continuing to expand No Man’s Sky.
No Man’s Sky has changed significantly since 2016
The game's current position is particularly notable because of the difficulties surrounding its launch.
No Man’s Sky arrived with technical problems and criticism that the final game did not include several features players expected from its pre release promotion.
Its launch became one of the more controversial gaming releases of that period.
Hello Games then spent years adding features, improving performance and expanding the original design without charging for major updates.
Player sentiment gradually improved as a result.
By 2021, overall Steam reviews had reached Mostly Positive. The game's long term review consensus has since improved further to Very Positive.
Ten years after release, No Man’s Sky is now recording some of its strongest engagement while still receiving major updates. With COSMOS coming next and Light No Fire progressing in parallel, Hello Games appears to have no immediate plans to slow down support for the universe it started building in 2016.
