Insomniac Games has released a new behind the scenes video for Marvel’s Wolverine, offering a closer look at how the studio built Logan’s combat, animation, mutant abilities and visual effects.
The video runs for a little over four minutes and features several members of the development team discussing how they approached Wolverine as a playable character. Much of the focus is on making his powers feel convincing during real time gameplay, particularly his claws, healing factor and aggressive fighting style.
Marvel’s Wolverine launched exclusively for PlayStation 5 earlier this month, but the new video provides more detail on the development process behind some of its most distinctive features.
Combat was designed to feel brutal and uncomfortable
One of the clearest goals for the animation team was making Wolverine’s attacks feel different from conventional superhero combat.
Animation director Brian Wyser explained that the developers wanted certain attacks to make players physically react to what they were seeing. Instead of relying mainly on punches and standard melee animations, the team designed attacks around Logan’s claws, including graphic wounds and dismemberment.
Creating those sequences required cooperation between several departments. Character artists had to prepare models that could support individual limbs being removed during combat, while animators had to make sure each movement looked believable.
Visual effects artists then added elements such as blood, sparks and other effects depending on the type of damage being shown.
The development team refers to the dismemberment system internally as “limbing,” which required the character models to be built with clean separation points for different body parts.
| Development area | Main focus |
|---|---|
| Combat | Making Logan’s claws feel powerful and dangerous |
| Animation | Supporting realistic attacks and dismemberment |
| Character design | Preparing models for removable body parts |
| Visual effects | Handling blood, electricity and impact effects |
| Mutant powers | Presenting abilities with cinematic quality in real time |
The developers also discussed how important it was to capture the fantasy of becoming Wolverine from the earliest stages of production.
Even before complete levels had been created, early builds were reportedly able to communicate the basic feeling of using Logan’s claws and abilities. That experience became an important reference point for the rest of development.
Mutant powers were built to look cinematic in real time
Creative director Marcus Smith described Marvel’s Wolverine as a project created with long time fans in mind.
According to Smith, the development team placed particular attention on how mutant abilities are represented visually. The goal was to create effects that could resemble scenes from a high budget movie while still running directly during gameplay.
That includes combat animations, environmental effects and other powers appearing without the need to move into separate pre rendered sequences.
The new development video arrives after Marvel’s Wolverine reportedly delivered a strong commercial start on PS5.

Recent reports claim the game has already become one of the best selling PS5 releases of the year in the UK. Another report estimated approximately 1.9 million copies were sold during its first three days, including around one million digital preorders.
Those sales figures have not been independently confirmed, but they suggest the game may have opened strongly following its September launch.
Marvel’s Wolverine has also received positive attention for its combat, boss encounters, story pacing and progression systems. Some criticism has focused on minor technical problems and stealth mechanics that are less developed than the main combat systems.
The new behind the scenes footage provides additional context for why close range combat received so much attention during development. For Insomniac Games, making Wolverine feel physically powerful appears to have influenced nearly every part of the game, from animation and character modelling to blood effects and the presentation of his mutant abilities.
