Lord of the Rings War in the North Legacy Edition Runs at 4K 60 FPS on Xbox Series X

Lord of the Rings: War in the North has returned on modern consoles with a new Legacy Edition, and early footage shows clear resolution and frame rate upgrades on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

The re release is based on the 2011 Xbox 360 game rather than being a full remaster. Even so, the modern version runs at higher resolutions and targets 60 FPS on both current Xbox consoles.

Xbox Series X gets the strongest presentation at 4K, while Xbox Series S runs the game at 1440p.

Xbox Series S1440p60 FPS

Early footage suggests the frame rate is stable on both consoles, with no obvious drops below 60 FPS during the captured gameplay.

Series X delivers the best visual result

On Xbox Series X, War in the North Legacy Edition runs at 4K and 60 FPS.

That gives the 2011 action RPG a much cleaner presentation than the original Xbox 360 release, even though the underlying assets have not been fully rebuilt.

The game still clearly looks like an older title, but the higher resolution helps textures, environments and character models appear sharper on modern displays.

The most important improvement is the frame rate.

A seemingly locked 60 FPS gives combat and movement a smoother feel than the original version.

Series S drops to 1440p but keeps 60 FPS

Xbox Series S runs the game at 1440p.

The image is slightly softer than the Series X version, but the difference does not appear especially large in the early comparison footage.

More importantly, Series S also appears to maintain 60 FPS.

That means the lower resolution is being used to preserve smooth performance rather than pushing the smaller console toward a less stable target.

For a re release of an Xbox 360 game, 1440p may sound conservative, but the result still looks substantially cleaner than the original.

Legacy Edition is not a full remaster

The Legacy Edition should not be confused with a complete graphical remake or remaster.

The publisher has not detailed major asset replacements, new lighting systems or extensive texture work.

Instead, the focus appears to be on modern platform compatibility, higher resolution, improved frame rate and some optimization work.

The game has also reportedly been adjusted for solo play.

That matters because War in the North was originally designed around a three character party and cooperative play.

Online features had a rough first day

The launch was not completely smooth.

Players initially reported problems connecting to online co op, and Xbox achievements were also unavailable for much of the first day.

Those issues appear to be improving, although some players may still encounter online problems during the early launch period.

The core single player experience does not appear to be affected in the same way.

A straightforward upgrade for an older game

War in the North Legacy Edition is a relatively simple modern re release rather than a major rebuild.

Still, the technical improvements are meaningful.

Xbox Series X owners get 4K at 60 FPS, while Series S players get 1440p at the same frame rate target.

For a game that had been stuck on older hardware for years, the Legacy Edition offers a much easier way to play it on current systems with noticeably improved image quality and smoother performance.
