The Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Kids 16GB is down to $169.99 at Amazon, cutting $60 from its $229.99 list price. The odd part is what that price undercuts, because the adult Kindle Paperwhite built on the same hardware costs $199.99.

Buying the grown-up model and adding Amazon's own cover costs $236.98. The Kids version bundles a cover, six months of Amazon Kids+ and a second year of warranty, and still lands $66.99 below that.
This is the 2024 Paperwhite Kids in the Starfish cover, with a 7-inch glare-free display at 300 ppi and 16GB of storage. Amazon lists it as in stock and sells it directly, with no marketplace seller in the buy box.
Kindle Paperwhite Kids specifications
Amazon publishes the hardware details in the listing's technical details block. The figures below come from that table.
| Specification | Kindle Paperwhite Kids 16GB |
|---|---|
| Display | 7-inch Paperwhite display, 300 ppi, 16-level gray scale |
| Front light | Built in, with adjustable warm light |
| Storage | 16 GB |
| Waterproofing | IPX8 |
| Battery life | Up to 12 weeks |
| Charge time | Under 2.5 hours with a 9W USB power adapter |
| Wi-Fi | 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz |
| Listed size | 5.2 x 7 x 0.5 inches (132.2 x 178 x 13.2 mm) |
| Listed weight | 11.6 ounces (329 g) |
| Warranty | 2-year worry-free guarantee |
That battery claim carries conditions. Amazon rates it "based on a half hour of reading per day with wireless off and the light setting at 13". Streaming Audible over Bluetooth will reduce it, the company adds.
The listed 11.6-ounce weight and half-inch thickness look like measurements taken with the bundled cover fitted. Amazon does not say either way.

The kids model costs less than the adult Paperwhite
Amazon runs its own comparison table on the listing, and every hardware row matches. Display size, resolution, storage, battery life, warm light, flush-front design and IPX8 waterproofing read identically for the Paperwhite Kids and the standard Paperwhite.
The difference is the bundle and the price. The ad-supported Kindle Paperwhite 16GB sits at $199.99 with no discount showing, and the version without lockscreen ads costs $219.99.
| Model | Price | What the price includes |
|---|---|---|
| Kindle Paperwhite Kids 16GB | $169.99 | 7-inch display, cover, 6 months of Kids+, 2-year guarantee |
| Kindle Paperwhite 16GB, ad-supported | $199.99 | 7-inch display only, 1-year limited warranty |
| Kindle Paperwhite 16GB, without lockscreen ads | $219.99 | 7-inch display only, 1-year limited warranty |
| Kindle Kids 16GB | $122.99 | 6-inch display, no warm light, not waterproof |
Amazon's own Paperwhite and Colorsoft case sells for $36.99. Added to the ad-free adult model, the total reaches $256.98, or $86.99 above the Kids bundle.
The cheaper route is the Kindle Kids 16GB at $122.99, down from $179.99. It drops to a 6-inch screen, loses the warm light and the IPX8 rating, and halves the battery claim to six weeks.
Amazon has been discounting across the range, having already cut the entry-level Kindle to $90 and dropped the 64GB Kindle Scribe to $309.99. The Paperwhite Kids is the one that now sits oddly against its own sibling.
What the Kids bundle actually adds
Three things, according to Amazon's comparison table. A cover is included where the adult model lists one as sold separately, and this unit ships in the Starfish design.
The warranty doubles, from a one-year limited warranty to a two-year worry-free guarantee. Amazon also includes six months of Amazon Kids+, a reading subscription aimed at ages 3 to 12.
Six months is the term here, not a year. Amazon says the subscription "will automatically renew every month starting at just $7.99/month plus applicable tax" after that, and can be cancelled through the Parent Dashboard.
The company values the whole package at "up to a $242 value" without breaking the figure down. That phrasing is hedged, and the listing does not itemise the cover or the subscription separately.
The lockscreen ads question has a conditional answer
Underneath the Kids branding this is an ad-supported Kindle. Amazon states that the device "is automatically set up for your kid to enjoy an ad-free experience", so a child using the Kids profile sees no sponsored screensavers.
Leaving that profile changes it. Amazon says that if a parent exits Amazon Kids using a passcode, "sponsored screensavers will be displayed on the device's lock screen", along with access to the web browser and the full Kindle store.
So the ad-free promise applies to the Kids profile rather than the hardware. Anyone planning to use this as a regular Kindle should factor that in, along with a reading interface built for children.
Sideloading is the usual workaround for a locked-down library, and this guide to managing ebooks with Calibre covers the conversion side. A factory reset on a Kindle e-reader also returns the device to a clean state if the Kids profile is no longer wanted.
What the listing leaves out
Amazon publishes a 300 ppi figure but no pixel resolution, and no count of front-light LEDs. The listing never mentions page-turn buttons in either direction, so their presence is simply not stated.
The claims of "25% faster page turns" and higher contrast name no comparison model. Amazon also notes that "certain accessibility features, including VoiceView, are not currently supported on Kindle Paperwhite Kids".
No end date is attached to the $169.99 price. Amazon sets these limited-time figures without publishing a deadline, and prices on all four models above can change without notice, so the comparison holds only for as long as the discount does.
