Amazon has cut the Kindle Colorsoft Kids 16 GB to $209.99, down from a $299.99 list price. The more useful figure is the gap it creates: at this price, the color screen costs $40.00 more than the black-and-white Kindle Paperwhite Kids.

The $90.00 saving carries a plain limited-time deal badge and is open to every buyer. No Prime-exclusive price appears on the listing, although a Prime Big Deal Days banner runs above it.
The deal unit is the 16 GB model with the Fantasy River cover. Amazon.com holds the buy box, with no other seller on the listing.
Nobody is charging the $299.99 anchor. It is Amazon's own list price for a device Amazon makes and sells alone, so it is a reference figure rather than a historic low.
What Amazon says the color display does differently
Amazon's technical details list a 7-inch Colorsoft panel with a built-in light, 300 ppi in black and white and 150 ppi in color. Color is therefore drawn at half the linear density of the text.
Amazon names the cause itself. The same entry says a color filter layer was added, and warns that the texture or brightness can look different from a Paperwhite.
The company draws the line between the two devices itself. Its bullets say the Colorsoft Kids display is optimized for reading in color and is different from the Paperwhite Kids display, which is optimized for black and white reading.
Battery life pays part of the bill. Amazon rates the Colorsoft Kids at up to eight weeks against up to twelve for the Paperwhite Kids.
Both figures assume half an hour of reading per day, wireless off and the light at setting 13.
Color e-ink is still new across the range. Amazon brought the same technology to its note-taking line when it unveiled a color Kindle Scribe late last year.

Two entries need care. The 11.8oz weight and half-inch thickness almost certainly describe the device inside its cover, and Amazon does not say either way.
What color costs against the other kids Kindles
| Model | Price | Display | Battery | Amazon Kids+ |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kindle Colorsoft Kids 16 GB | $209.99 | 7-inch color, 300/150 ppi | Up to 8 weeks | 12 months included |
| Kindle Paperwhite Kids 16GB | $169.99 | 7-inch black and white, 300 ppi | Up to 12 weeks | 6 months included |
| Kindle Colorsoft 16 GB (adult) | $189.99 | 7-inch color, 300/150 ppi | Up to 8 weeks | Sold separately |
| Kindle Kids 16GB | $122.99 | 6-inch black and white, 300 ppi | Up to 6 weeks | 6 months included |
The Kindle Paperwhite Kids at $169.99 is the direct comparison, and the $40.00 gap is the whole decision. That gap also buys six extra months of Kids+, which Amazon values at its own floor rate of $7.99 a month.
On list arithmetic the longer subscription covers the premium twice over. However, Amazon hedges that rate with the words starting at, and a parent who cancels gains nothing from it.
The other direction is cheaper still. The adult Kindle Colorsoft is $189.99 in its no-ads version, with the same panel, no cover, one year of warranty and no subscription.
Assembling the equivalent costs more than the bundle. Amazon's own Paperwhite and Colorsoft case is $36.99, so the adult route lands at $226.98 against $209.99 here.
The budget step down is the 6-inch Kindle Kids at $122.99. Amazon.com holds the buy box on all four, with no marketplace seller.
Whether color is worth it for a child's reader
The answer depends entirely on what the child reads. Comics, graphic novels and illustrated books gain something a Paperwhite cannot show, and Amazon's Kids+ panel promises thousands of them.
Ordinary prose gains almost nothing. Chapter-book text renders at the same 300 ppi on both devices, so color only reaches the covers and the occasional illustration.
Set against that are the 150 ppi color layer, Amazon's warning about texture and brightness, and four fewer weeks of battery. Amazon says the device is set up ad-free, and the Parent Dashboard handles age filters and bedtimes.
Borrowed books work the same on either model for families that use the Kindle lending library.
What the listing does not say
Several things a buyer would want are absent. Amazon publishes no pixel resolution, no color gamut, no contrast ratio and no LED count, and lists no page-turn buttons either way.
The up to $364 value headline is never itemized, and VoiceView is explicitly not supported on this model. Handing the device on later means a full factory reset, which clears the child profile with it.
No end date is published for the $209.99 price, and the countdown on the page renders without any hours or minutes attached. Prices and stock on Amazon move without notice, so the figures above are the ones showing at the time of writing on October 5, 2026.
