Intel Confirms Nova Lake Will Use 18A-P Process and Target High-End Desktop Gaming, With More Details Coming at CES 2027

Intel has confirmed that its upcoming Nova Lake processors will use the company's advanced 18A-P manufacturing technology, with additional details scheduled for CES 2027 in January.

The announcement came during Intel's latest earnings call, where executives expressed confidence that Nova Lake could improve the company's position in the premium desktop processor market.

Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan said development is progressing ahead of schedule, while CFO David Zinsner acknowledged that the company has struggled to compete effectively in the high-end desktop segment.

Nova Lake is expected to address that weakness, potentially offering stronger competition against AMD's Ryzen X3D processors.

Intel also expects Nova Lake to achieve twice as many design wins at launch as Panther Lake, although detailed performance figures and final specifications have not been announced.

Intel Nova Lake Will Use the Improved 18A-P Manufacturing Node

Nova Lake will become Intel's first client processor family to use its 18A-P process technology.

The manufacturing node improves upon Intel 18A, which is already being used for Panther Lake and Wildcat Lake processors.

According to Intel's published expectations, 18A-P can deliver approximately 9% higher performance at the same power consumption or more than 18% lower power consumption at equivalent performance.

However, these improvements describe the manufacturing process and should not be interpreted as guaranteed performance gains for complete Nova Lake processors.

Intel's current Arrow Lake desktop processors, including the Core Ultra 9 285K, use compute tiles manufactured on TSMC's N3B process.

The shift to 18A-P represents an important development in Intel's efforts to manufacture more advanced client processors using its own technology.

Intel Wants Nova Lake to Strengthen Its High-End Desktop Position

During the earnings call, Zinsner acknowledged a weakness in Intel's existing premium desktop lineup.

He said Nova Lake is expected to address that gap and improve the company's competitiveness.

The comments are significant because AMD has established a strong position in gaming performance through its Ryzen processors featuring 3D V-Cache.

Intel's Arrow Lake generation has struggled to match those competitors in several gaming workloads.

Nova Lake is expected to introduce Big Last Level Cache, or bLLC, technology as a potential response to AMD's cache focused designs.

However, Intel has not clarified whether its high-end desktop ambitions involve a dedicated enthusiast processor family or simply more competitive mainstream desktop chips.

Leaked Nova Lake Specifications Suggest Several Cache-Enhanced Models

Unofficial specifications suggest Intel is preparing multiple Nova Lake configurations across its Core Ultra 5, Core Ultra 7, and Core Ultra 9 families.

Rumored processorCore configurationBase powerbLLC
Core Ultra 9 4970K BFC8P + 16E + 4 LP-E125WYes
Core Ultra 9 4950K8P + 16E125WNo
Core Ultra 7 4870K BFC8P + 12E + 4 LP-E125WYes
Core Ultra 7 4850K8P + 12E125WNo
Core Ultra 5 4650K6P + 12E125WNo

These specifications remain unconfirmed and may change before release.

The rumored Core Ultra 9 4970K BFC would become one of the most prominent models if Intel adopts the reported configuration.

More Nova Lake Details Expected at CES 2027

Intel plans to discuss Nova Lake further at CES 2027, scheduled for January 6 through January 9 in Las Vegas.

The company expects its upcoming processor family to help recover market share, particularly in premium desktop systems.

However, important details remain unknown, including final product pricing, gaming benchmarks, availability, and the performance benefits of bLLC.

The announcement also comes as rising memory prices continue to affect PC demand, creating additional challenges for manufacturers.

For now, Intel's confirmation of the 18A-P process and its renewed focus on premium desktop performance provides a clearer direction for Nova Lake.

The upcoming CES presentation should reveal whether the company can deliver the improvements needed to compete more effectively with AMD's strongest gaming processors.
