Intel has reached another development milestone for its upcoming 14A semiconductor manufacturing process, with version 0.9 of its Process Design Kit (PDK) now available.
The company plans to release PDK 1.0 during the first quarter of 2027, bringing its next generation manufacturing technology closer to production readiness.
Intel 14A is a 1.4nm class process intended for advanced processors and other demanding semiconductor applications. The technology is also important to Intel's efforts to attract external chip designers to its foundry business.
While the latest development shows progress, commercial manufacturing will still require further validation, improved yields and sufficient customer demand.
Intel 14A PDK 0.9 Allows Customers to Advance Chip Designs
A Process Design Kit provides semiconductor designers with the technical information and tools needed to develop chips for a particular manufacturing process.
These kits include design rules, transistor models and other specifications that help engineers evaluate whether their products can be manufactured successfully.
The availability of PDK 0.9 allows prospective customers to move further into the design process using Intel's upcoming technology.
It also provides an opportunity to identify compatibility problems before the manufacturing process reaches its final development stages.
Intel previously made an earlier PDK 0.5 version available for initial testing and evaluation.
The planned PDK 1.0 release represents another important step toward supporting production designs.
| Development milestone | Timeline |
|---|---|
| Intel 14A PDK 0.5 | Previously released |
| Intel 14A PDK 0.9 | Available |
| Intel 14A PDK 1.0 | First quarter of 2027 |
| Risk production | Planned for 2027 |
| High volume manufacturing | Targeted for 2028 |
Intel 14A Will Introduce Advanced Manufacturing Technologies
Intel's 14A process is expected to use improved RibbonFET transistors and PowerDirect backside power delivery.
The company also plans to incorporate High NA EUV lithography, which supports the production of increasingly complex semiconductor structures.

Earlier development updates indicated that Intel was making encouraging progress in reducing manufacturing defects.
However, technical improvements alone will not determine the commercial success of 14A.
Intel must also demonstrate competitive performance, power efficiency and manufacturing costs to attract major customers.
External Customers Remain Important for Intel Foundry
Intel is developing 14A for its own products while pursuing additional business from external semiconductor companies.
The availability of more mature design tools could help potential customers make manufacturing decisions during 2027.
Competition will remain strong, particularly from TSMC and its upcoming A14 technology.
Although PDK 0.9 represents meaningful progress, it does not indicate that Intel 14A is ready for large scale production.
The planned PDK 1.0 release in early 2027 will be another important milestone as Intel prepares its advanced manufacturing process for commercial use.
