Helldivers 2 is finally getting DLSS, FSR, XeSS, and new console performance upgrades

Helldivers 2 is getting a major technical update on May 27, bringing long requested upscaling support, latency improvements, stability work, and new visual optimization features across platforms. The update is notable because Helldivers 2 launched on PC without major upscaling technologies such as Nvidia DLSS and AMD FSR, which made it unusual among modern PC releases. That is now changing with support for DLSS 4.5, FSR, and XeSS on PC.

Arrowhead Game Studios says the update was developed in collaboration with Nixxes and focuses on three main areas: stability, latency reduction, and advanced upscaling. The goal is to keep performance more consistent during demanding moments, which matters in Helldivers 2 because battles can quickly become crowded with enemies, explosions, particle effects, and heavy action.

PC players get the widest upscaling support, while PS5 Pro stays on the older PSSR version

PC players will get the biggest set of image reconstruction options. The update adds FSR 4.0.3 for supported high end GPUs, FSR 3.1.5, DLSS 4.5, and XeSS 3.0. That gives players more flexibility depending on their graphics card and preferred balance between image quality and performance.

Console players are also getting upscaling support, but the PlayStation 5 Pro version may disappoint some owners. PS5 Pro will use PSSR 1 rather than the newer PSSR 2.0. That is a notable limitation because PSSR 2.0 has already shown stronger image quality in other games, including sharper output and better stability. For now, Arrowhead has not confirmed when or whether Helldivers 2 will move to the newer version.

PlatformUpscaling support
PCFSR 4.0.3, FSR 3.1.5, DLSS 4.5, XeSS 3.0
PS5 ProPSSR 1
PS5FSR 3.1

The update also adds Variable Refresh Rate support for PS5 and PS5 Pro, which should help reduce visible stutter from V Sync on supported displays without introducing screen tearing. Variable Rate Shading is also being added, allowing the game to reduce shading work in parts of the image where detail is less important, lowering GPU load while keeping important areas clear.

Dynamic Resolution Scaling is coming to PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. This should help the game adjust resolution during demanding scenes to protect frame rate. Arrowhead is also increasing resolution to 1440p in the Performance preset on PS5 and Xbox Series X, along with the Quality preset on PS5 Power Saving Mode.

The May 27 update is not the end of Arrowhead’s technical work. The studio says it will continue watching performance across hardware configurations after launch and plans another tech focused update this summer. For Helldivers 2 players, this is a meaningful step forward, especially on PC, where proper upscaling support has been missing for a long time.
