CD Projekt RED is now targeting 2028 for the release of The Witcher 4, giving you the clearest official launch window yet for the next major entry in the series.
The update came from joint CEO Michał Nowakowski, who said more than 500 developers are currently working on the project. He described The Witcher 4 as the studio’s biggest and most ambitious game to date, with a large open world, action focused combat and a story intended to carry the series forward with a new lead character.
The 2028 target means the game is still some distance away, but it also gives the development team a longer runway after years of early work and technology development.
More than 500 developers are working on The Witcher 4
CD Projekt RED says the project now has a development team of more than 500 people.
| Detail | Current information |
|---|---|
| Release window | 2028 |
| Developer | CD Projekt RED |
| Development team | More than 500 people |
| Genre | Open world action RPG |
| Protagonist | Ciri |
| Engine | Unreal Engine 5 based technology |
| Current status | In active development |
The studio says it wants to create a large and immersive open world alongside faster action and a deep narrative.
Ciri is set to take over as the main protagonist, following the direction established in the game’s reveal.
The Witcher 4 has not yet received a full gameplay showcase, although CD Projekt RED previously demonstrated technology associated with the project running on a base PlayStation 5 at 60fps.
That demonstration was primarily intended to show the technology and development tools behind the new game rather than represent a finished section of the final release.
The Witcher 3 expansion arrives before the new game
CD Projekt RED is also preparing a new expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt called Songs of the Past.
The expansion is scheduled for 2027 and will bring Geralt of Rivia back for another story set in the older game’s world.

Its full reveal is planned for Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25, 2026, followed by playable demonstrations during the event.
That makes Songs of the Past an important release for the franchise while players wait for The Witcher 4.
The expansion may also help connect the existing trilogy with the new storyline centered on Ciri, although the exact relationship between the two projects has not been fully explained.
CD Projekt RED asks players to give the team time
The studio is making it clear that The Witcher 4 is not close to launch.
Nowakowski asked the community to give the team time to finish the project properly, emphasizing that the scale of the game requires a lengthy development period.
That approach is understandable given the size of the project and CD Projekt RED’s ambitions for the next phase of the franchise.
A 2028 launch would also place a significant gap between The Witcher 3 and the next numbered entry, although the 2027 expansion should provide new content before then.
There is still plenty that remains unknown, including the final world structure, combat systems, progression mechanics and exact release date.
For now, 2028 is the official target, with more than 500 developers working to turn The Witcher 4 into the next major chapter of the series.
