A Grand Theft Auto 5 mod adds random UFO sightings across Los Santos, introducing alien encounters that can appear at night in different parts of the map.
The mod is called UFO Sightings and works as a simple script that spawns UFOs in random locations. Its aim is to make the encounters feel mysterious, with players receiving reports of unusual activity before heading toward the marked area.
The idea sounds subtle, but the actual encounters can become much more dramatic depending on where the UFO appears.
UFOs only appear at night
One of the most important conditions is that sightings are limited to nighttime.
That means players searching during the day will not see anything, even if they spend time exploring areas such as Mount Chiliad.
Once the in game clock moves into the correct time period, the mod can trigger a sighting and mark a distant part of the map.
A notification then appears to inform the player that a UFO has been reported.

The mod is designed around surprise rather than giving players a fixed mission or permanent map marker.
Encounters can be much less subtle than expected
In one test, the reported UFO appeared only around 30 feet above a downtown Los Santos intersection.
Instead of hovering quietly in the distance, it produced intense flashing lights that made the encounter immediately obvious.
That made the experience very different from the traditional idea of a distant UFO sighting where the observer is never completely certain about what they saw.
The effect was closer to a public spectacle in the middle of the city.
After remaining in place for a while, the UFO eventually stopped flashing and began rising into the sky before disappearing.
The encounter therefore still had a temporary quality, even if its appearance was far from subtle.
Existing GTA 5 mods can make encounters even stranger
The UFO Sightings mod can also interact in unpredictable ways with other modifications.
In this case, the player already had a Superman powers mod installed, making it possible to immediately fly toward the UFO once the sighting notification appeared.
Other modifications had also filled the game with recurring hitmen, adding more chaos to what was originally supposed to be a simple alien encounter.
That highlights one of the main reasons GTA 5 remains popular with modders.
Scripts that are relatively simple on their own can become much more unusual when combined with other systems.
A random UFO event becomes very different when the player can fly, use unusual powers or deal with heavily modified enemy behavior at the same time.
The mod keeps the basic idea simple
UFO Sightings does not appear to introduce a large story, quests or complex alien mechanics.
Its purpose is much narrower.

It adds unexpected events to the world and gives players another reason to explore Los Santos at night.
The randomness is an important part of the design because players do not know exactly where the next encounter will take place.
That can make familiar areas feel slightly different, particularly for people who have already spent hundreds of hours in GTA 5.
Even when the actual sightings are less mysterious than intended, the mod still succeeds in adding another unpredictable event to a game that already has a large modding ecosystem.
For players interested in turning GTA 5 into an increasingly strange sandbox, random UFO appearances fit naturally alongside the many other scripts and gameplay modifications available for the PC version.
