Grand Theft Auto IV is getting a major visual overhaul on PC through an RTX Remix project that adds full path tracing, improved lighting and support for high resolution texture mods.
The project is being developed by modder xoxor4d, with version 1.4.2 recently released for GTA IV: The Complete Edition version 1.2.0.59.
Combined with a separate 4K texture pack, the mod can make the 2008 game look far more modern, although the visual improvements also come with demanding hardware requirements.
RTX Remix replaces GTA 4's original lighting
The biggest change comes from replacing much of the game’s original static lighting with path traced illumination.
Instead of relying primarily on baked or fixed lighting, path tracing calculates how light moves through the environment and reflects from surfaces.
That produces more natural shadows, reflections and indirect lighting across Liberty City.
| Feature | Modded GTA IV |
|---|---|
| RTX Remix version | 1.4.2 |
| Compatible game version | GTA IV Complete Edition 1.2.0.59 |
| Main graphics upgrade | Full path tracing |
| Additional option | 4K texture mod |
| Tested high end GPU | GeForce RTX 5090 |
| Reported low point in demo | Around 60 FPS |
| Possible performance limit | CPU bottleneck |
The difference is particularly noticeable at night, where artificial lights can illuminate nearby objects and streets more naturally than in the original release.
Dynamic shadows also respond more realistically to changing light sources and moving objects.
4K textures add another layer of detail
The RTX Remix project can be combined with Warcaco’s 4K texture graphics mod.
That texture pack improves environmental surfaces such as brick walls, buildings, windows and other objects throughout Liberty City.
Used together, path tracing and higher resolution textures significantly change the appearance of the game without replacing its underlying world or design.
The result still looks like GTA IV, but with considerably more detailed materials and much more advanced lighting.
Performance requirements are substantial
These upgrades are demanding.
A demonstration running on an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 reportedly dropped to around 60 FPS in some areas despite using one of the fastest consumer GPUs available.
The mod’s documentation also warns that the CPU can become a bottleneck because GTA IV renders a large number of detailed meshes.

That means simply installing a faster graphics card may not remove every performance limitation.
Players using older processors or midrange GPUs may need to lower settings, use upscaling or accept lower frame rates to make the mod practical.
RTX Remix gives old games modern rendering features
NVIDIA released RTX Remix as a free and open source toolkit designed to modernize older games without requiring developers to provide original source code.
The technology can add features such as path tracing, improved materials and AI assisted asset upgrades to compatible titles.
Several major projects have already demonstrated the approach, including Portal with RTX and Half Life 2 RTX.
Community projects such as GTA IV RTX Remix show that the same technology can also be used by independent modders rather than only by NVIDIA backed teams.
GTA IV remains a strong candidate for a visual remaster
GTA IV originally launched in 2008 and was praised at the time for its detailed version of Liberty City.
Its visuals have aged considerably compared with modern games, but the underlying environment still provides a strong foundation for lighting and texture upgrades.
Path tracing does not change the game’s physics, animation or core assets on its own, but it can substantially improve how those assets are presented.
For PC players with sufficiently powerful hardware, the combination of RTX Remix and 4K textures offers one of the most dramatic ways to revisit GTA IV while waiting for Grand Theft Auto VI.
