Gamescom 2026 Sells Out Every Hall as Political Attention Grows Around the Gaming Industry

Gamescom 2026 is set to become the largest edition in the event’s history, with every exhibition hall fully booked for the first time and more than 1,600 exhibitors preparing to attend in Cologne.

Around 70% of those exhibitors are coming from outside Germany, while the indie area has grown to 420 studios, an increase of 16% compared with the previous year.

Beyond the record scale, organizers are also pointing to growing political recognition of gaming as one of the most important developments surrounding this year’s event.

German Federal President Frank Walter Steinmeier will become the first sitting head of state in the country to attend Gamescom. He is expected to open the Gamescom Congress, join a discussion about games and democracy, and meet developers and members of the gaming community.

Large publishers remain responsible for much of the exhibition space because of their substantial booths, but demand has increased across almost every part of the industry.

Organizers say that strong investment in physical booths shows publishers and developers still place value on meeting players directly and collecting feedback on upcoming games.

Germany wants stronger conditions for game development

The political side of Gamescom is also becoming more prominent.

One of the main policy priorities for the German gaming industry is improving the country’s competitiveness as a place to develop and publish games.

Organizers highlighted the importance of predictable funding and tax incentives, particularly as other countries already offer financial programs designed to attract studios, talent and investment.

The wider concern is that Germany and Europe could lose projects to regions where development costs are lower or government support is more established.

Gamescom 2026 is expected to provide a major platform for those discussions, especially with senior political figures attending the event.

Games Done Quick joins Gamescom for the first time

Games Done Quick will also hold its first on site European event at Gamescom this year.

The partnership will include three days of live speedrunning in support of the Gaming for Democracy initiative.

Speedrunning itself is not completely new to Gamescom, but the collaboration marks a larger and more formal presence for the community.

Whether the partnership becomes permanent will depend on the response from attendees and the wider speedrunning community after this year’s event.

Indie support expands across physical and digital events

Gamescom is also investing more heavily in independent developers.

The Gamescom Awesome Indies show is being expanded with trailer premieres, gameplay reveals, previews and stories about the teams behind selected projects.

The goal is to provide smaller studios with international visibility beyond the physical indie area.

Other initiatives connect developers with publishers, investors, media and players through business networking, digital storefront events and investment programs.

The organizers see Gamescom’s role as different from that of publishers or platform holders because the event can act as a neutral meeting point across different companies and ecosystems.

Anime, cosplay and Asian pop culture gain more space

Asian pop culture is becoming a larger part of Gamescom without replacing gaming as the event’s main focus.

The 2026 edition includes an expanded cosplay presence, K pop performances, anime related programming and a new Asian Garden in the outdoor area.

Organizers argue that these additions reflect how closely games now overlap with anime, manga, cosplay and other entertainment formats.

Games increasingly inspire adaptations in other media, while established anime and manga franchises continue to expand into games.

Accessibility requirements become more detailed

Gamescom has also expanded its accessibility guidelines for exhibitors.

Companies are now expected to provide clearer information about the accessibility of their booths and consider features such as step free access, accessible queues, gaming stations, stages, retreat areas and support for visitors experiencing sensory overload.

The event will also provide more accessibility information through its location tools and increase the number of reservable wheelchairs.

Organizers plan to measure progress through attendee feedback, community involvement, partner input and post event reviews.

Sustainability efforts continue in 2026

Gamescom is continuing several environmental programs under its Gamescom Goes Green initiative.

Last year, a recycling partnership kept 2,260 kilograms of materials out of landfill, distributed reusable materials to six regional organizations and reportedly avoided around 5,000 kilograms of CO2 emissions.

More than 12,500 green tickets were also sold in 2025, while the Gamescom Forest expanded to roughly 33,500 square meters.

Those efforts will continue this year alongside food donation programs and voluntary climate contributions.

Gamescom 2026 will run from August 26 through August 30 in Cologne. With every hall booked, a record exhibitor count and increased political involvement, the event is becoming not only a major showcase for upcoming games but also a larger platform for discussions about gaming’s economic, cultural and social role.
