Tired of Copilot popping up? Use one of these quick methods. Works on Windows 11 23H2 and newer.
Before you start
- Pro/Enterprise/Education: use Group Policy (fastest full disable).
- Home: use the Registry method.
- You’ll need an administrator account.
- Restart after changes.
1) Quick fix: hide the Copilot button (1 minute)
- Right-click the taskbar and choose Taskbar settings.
- Under Taskbar items, switch Copilot to Off.
What it does: Hides the button only. Copilot can still be launched other ways.
2) Fully turn off Copilot via Group Policy (Pro/Enterprise/Education)
- Press Win + R, type gpedit.msc, press Enter.
- Go to Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → Windows Components → Windows Copilot.
- Open Turn off Windows Copilot → set to Enabled → OK.
- Restart Windows.
Result: Copilot is disabled system-wide (no button, no shortcut).
3) Windows 11 Home: disable via Registry
- Press Win + R, type regedit, press Enter.
- Go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows - Right-click Windows → New → Key → name it WindowsCopilot.
- Inside it, New → DWORD (32-bit) Value → name TurnOffWindowsCopilot → set Value data to 1.
- Restart Windows.
Undo: Set the value to 0 (or delete it) and restart.
Note: You can also set the same value under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to apply device-wide.
4) Optional: turn off Copilot in Microsoft Edge
- Open Edge → Settings → Sidebar → Copilot.
- Turn off Show Copilot (and any Copilot/shopping alerts).
- Restart Edge.
Tips & notes
- If Win + C or Alt + Space still launches Copilot after hiding the button, use Group Policy or the Registry method.
- After updates, recheck the setting if Copilot reappears.
