Dark Souls 3 is getting a major lighting overhaul through an upcoming path tracing mod that significantly changes how the game handles shadows, indirect lighting and environmental illumination.
The project is being developed as a new version of the DS Lighting Engine, the same modding effort that previously brought path tracing to Dark Souls 2.
A release date has not yet been announced, but early work in progress footage has already shown areas including the High Wall of Lothric and Firelink Shrine running with the new lighting system.

The mod is still being refined, so the current visuals should not be treated as final.
Dark Souls 3 is more demanding than Dark Souls 2
The developer says Dark Souls 3 has around ten times the geometry of Dark Souls 2, which increases the workload significantly.
Despite that difference, the expected hardware support remains similar to the Dark Souls 2 version of the lighting engine.
RTX 20 series and RTX 30 series cards are included among the supported GPUs.
However, players may need to use more aggressive upscaling settings than they used with the Dark Souls 2 mod.
For example, someone who could run the earlier project using a Quality upscaling preset may need to switch to Balanced mode in Dark Souls 3.
That tradeoff reflects the greater geometric complexity of the newer game.
Path tracing will likely depend on DLSS
Path tracing is much more demanding than conventional rasterization and standard ray tracing.
Instead of applying ray traced effects to a limited number of lighting features, path tracing attempts to simulate a much larger portion of scene lighting using ray based calculations.

That can dramatically increase GPU load.
As a result, upscaling technologies such as NVIDIA DLSS are expected to play an important role in making the Dark Souls 3 mod practical at reasonable frame rates.
The exact performance will vary depending on GPU, resolution and selected quality settings.
Elden Ring uses a more limited ray tracing implementation
FromSoftware has already experimented with ray tracing in Elden Ring.
That game supports ray traced ambient occlusion and shadows, but it does not use full path tracing.
The Dark Souls 3 mod goes much further by rebuilding the lighting model around a more comprehensive ray based approach.
The comparison highlights the difference between selective ray traced effects and a broader path traced lighting system.
Elden Ring’s implementation affects specific parts of the scene, while the Dark Souls 3 project aims to change the overall presentation of light and shadow.
Early footage shows a very different visual result
The work in progress videos show substantially different lighting across familiar Dark Souls 3 environments.
Firelink Shrine and the High Wall of Lothric both benefit from more natural shadowing, stronger indirect lighting and a greater sense of depth.
Some scenes are currently too dark, which is expected for a project that is still in development.
That means the final balance could change before release.
The mod’s visual impact is helped by Dark Souls 3’s existing art direction, which already relies heavily on dramatic lighting, dark interiors and atmospheric environments.
No release date has been confirmed
The developer has not yet provided a launch date for the Dark Souls 3 version of DS Lighting Engine.
For now, the project remains in active development, with performance tuning and visual balancing still underway.
What is clear is that the mod will support a relatively wide range of RTX hardware compared with many path tracing projects, although older cards may need heavier reliance on upscaling.
If development continues as planned, Dark Souls 3 could become another example of how community mods can add modern path tracing techniques to older games without an official remaster.
