Danganronpa series creator Kazutaka Kodaka has revealed that Danganronpa 2×2 was delayed partly because he wanted enough time to play Grand Theft Auto VI when it launches on November 16, 2026.
The development team also needed more time to finish the game, but Kodaka said GTA 6 influenced the scheduling decision. Releasing Danganronpa 2×2 close to Rockstar Games’ next open world title would have created both commercial pressure and a practical problem for its creator, who expected to spend significant time playing it.
The comment was lighthearted, but it reflects a wider effect GTA 6 is having on the 2026 release calendar. Many publishers have moved games away from November to avoid competing for attention, spending, and playtime during what is expected to be one of the largest entertainment launches of the year.
As a result, September and October have become unusually crowded, while several major games have also shifted into early 2027.
Danganronpa 2×2 Needed More Development Time
Kodaka made clear that the delay was not caused only by GTA 6. The team wanted additional development time, which remains the main practical reason for moving the release.
However, the timing of Rockstar’s game provided another reason to avoid the original window.
| Reason for delay | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Additional development time | The team wanted more time to improve the game |
| GTA 6 release | Kodaka wanted time to play it |
| Commercial competition | GTA 6 is expected to dominate attention and spending |
| Player availability | Many people may focus on one major game in November |
| Media visibility | Smaller releases could receive less coverage |
Kodaka joked that he would not have enough time to continue making Danganronpa 2×2 while also playing GTA 6. He described the schedule change as unavoidable.
The statement also highlights a simple point that is often overlooked. Developers remain active players themselves, and major releases can affect them personally as well as professionally.
GTA 6 Has Reshaped the 2026 Calendar
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on November 16 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Publishers have largely avoided placing major releases close to that date. A game launching in the same period would need to compete with GTA 6 for sales, online discussion, streaming coverage, reviews, and players’ limited free time.
| Release period | Current effect |
|---|---|
| September 2026 | More games moved into the month |
| October 2026 | Increasingly crowded release schedule |
| November 2026 | Fewer major releases near GTA 6 |
| February 2027 | Several delayed titles arriving |
| March 2027 | Another crowded launch period |
This concentration creates a different problem. Moving away from one dominant release means several publishers now compete with each other during September, October, February, and March.
Games that avoided GTA 6 may still struggle for attention because so many other titles made the same decision.
Early 2027 Is Becoming Equally Competitive
The effects of GTA 6 extend beyond November.
Several major games are now expected within a short period during February and March 2027. The reported list includes Stranger Than Heaven, Fable, Persona 4 Revival, and God of War Laufey.
| Upcoming game | Expected period |
|---|---|
| Stranger Than Heaven | Early 2027 |
| Fable | Early 2027 |
| Persona 4 Revival | Early 2027 |
| God of War Laufey | Early 2027 |
This creates another difficult period for players deciding how to divide their money and time.
Large role playing games and action adventures can require dozens of hours. Even players who can afford several releases may not have enough time to complete them before the next major launch arrives.
Publishers may therefore continue adjusting dates as the full 2027 calendar becomes clearer.
Delays Can Benefit Both Developers and Players
A delay often creates disappointment, but additional development time can improve the final game.
Teams can use the extra months to fix bugs, improve performance, revise unclear systems, complete localisation, and respond to testing feedback.
| Possible benefit | Result |
|---|---|
| More testing | Fewer technical problems |
| Additional balancing | Better difficulty and progression |
| Performance work | More stable frame rates |
| Interface improvements | Easier navigation |
| Better localisation | Clearer text and dialogue |
| Reduced launch pressure | More focused marketing |
For Danganronpa 2×2, the schedule change may also prevent the game from being overlooked during GTA 6’s launch period.
The Danganronpa series has a dedicated audience, but it does not operate at the same commercial scale as Grand Theft Auto. Choosing a quieter date gives the new game a better chance to receive focused coverage and discussion.
Developers Are Also Part of the Audience
Kodaka’s explanation stands out because it treats the release calendar from a personal perspective.

Industry discussions usually focus on revenue forecasts, marketing budgets, preorders, and competition. His comment instead acknowledges that game developers also want time to experience important releases.
That does not mean publishers normally delay projects for one person’s entertainment. In this case, GTA 6 appears to have reinforced a delay that was already useful for development and business reasons.
The humour works because the underlying situation is credible. A large number of developers are likely planning to play GTA 6, just like the wider audience.
GTA 6 May Continue Causing Schedule Changes
More release date changes could follow as November approaches.
Some publishers may still move games out of late 2026 if development takes longer than expected or if early sales forecasts suggest that GTA 6 will dominate the market.
Others may decide to launch during the same period if their game targets a very different audience or depends on holiday sales.
Danganronpa 2×2 now has more development time and avoids direct competition with Rockstar’s release. Kodaka also gains the chance to play GTA 6 without balancing it against the final stages of production.
The reason was expressed as a joke, but the scheduling impact is real. GTA 6 has already cleared much of November, crowded the surrounding months, and created another major competition window in early 2027.
