Pearl Abyss is still exploring ways to expand Crimson Desert after its strong launch, and two possibilities are now back in focus: a Nintendo Switch 2 version and some form of multiplayer support. Neither feature has a confirmed release window, but the studio’s latest investor briefing shows that both ideas are being actively reviewed.
The Switch 2 version is currently in an early technical stage. Pearl Abyss CEO Huh Jin-young said the port is being developed to the point where basic gameplay is possible, but the studio is not ready to confirm a launch schedule. The main challenge is not simply getting the game running. Pearl Abyss wants to see whether Crimson Desert’s graphics, action, and open world design can be maintained at a quality level that matches the studio’s standards.
That is a reasonable concern. Crimson Desert is built around dense environments, fast action, large scale exploration, and a strong visual identity. A Switch 2 port would need careful optimization to avoid feeling like a compromised version. Pearl Abyss is also reviewing platform cooperation and technical verification before making any public commitment.
Multiplayer is no longer being ruled out, but it would require major technical work
The more interesting shift is Pearl Abyss’s tone around multiplayer. Earlier comments made multiplayer sound unlikely, but the latest update is more open. Huh acknowledged strong interest in multiplayer, especially because Crimson Desert was originally planned as an online game before becoming a single player open world action adventure.
That history matters. The game began life with multiplayer ambitions, and its world, combat systems, and multiple playable characters may still leave room for future expansion. However, Pearl Abyss is being careful not to present multiplayer as a simple add on. The studio says it would require reviews of server structure, balance, platform stability, and live operation systems.
| Feature | Current status |
|---|---|
| Switch 2 version | In early review and optimization |
| Switch 2 gameplay | Basic gameplay reportedly possible |
| Switch 2 release timing | Not confirmed |
| Multiplayer mode | Under technical and gameplay review |
| Confirmed multiplayer launch | Not announced |
| Crimson Desert DLC | More information planned later this year |
| DokeV | Currently planned for the second half of 2028 |
The big question is what kind of multiplayer would make sense. A simple co op mode could allow friends to control existing playable characters during certain activities. A broader online mode would be far more difficult because it would need stronger infrastructure, progression balancing, and long term support. Pearl Abyss has not confirmed which direction it prefers.
For now, the studio is only saying there is room for multiplayer as part of its plan to let players enjoy the Crimson Desert IP for longer. That suggests the idea is being viewed as a long term expansion rather than a small patch.

The timing also fits Pearl Abyss’s wider strategy. Crimson Desert has become a major success for the company, and the studio has already confirmed DLC plans. More information on that content is expected later this year. If the game continues to perform well, a Switch 2 port and multiplayer expansion could help extend its life across more platforms and player groups.
Still, both ideas should be treated carefully. Switch 2 optimization is not guaranteed to meet Pearl Abyss’s quality targets, and multiplayer may prove too costly or complex depending on the design. The studio is clearly interested, but it is not promising either feature yet.
Crimson Desert’s future now looks more flexible than it did a few months ago. Pearl Abyss is not only supporting the base game with updates and DLC, but also studying ways to broaden its audience. A successful Switch 2 version would bring the game to another major platform, while multiplayer could change how long players stay engaged with the world. For now, both remain possibilities rather than confirmed additions.
