CONTROL Resonant Opens Most of Its World Within Two Hours and Could Be Remedy's Biggest Game Yet

Remedy says CONTROL Resonant is its biggest game so far, with most of its interconnected Manhattan zones opening to players within roughly the first one or two hours.

The sequel moves further into action RPG territory, giving you more freedom to choose abilities, Aberrant weapon forms, artifacts, and talent upgrades. Remedy says the main campaign should take about 25 to 30 hours, while exploring everything can push total playtime beyond 50 hours.

CONTROL Resonant launches on September 24 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S.

Most Zones Open Early in the Game

CONTROL Resonant does not use a traditional seamless open world.

Instead, Remedy has built Manhattan as several large interconnected zones, which the studio describes as open hubs or bubbles.

After the opening sections, most of the world becomes accessible within approximately one or two hours.

From that point, you can move between zones, continue the main story, explore side quests, or take part in other world activities.

The zones are not designed around a strict difficulty ladder. Remedy says they contain roughly similar amounts of content, although some areas may focus more heavily on main missions while others offer additional side material.

Each Area Has Fixed Weather and Time

Every zone has its own visual identity and supernatural influence.

Remedy says there is no dynamic day and night cycle.

Instead, each area has a fixed time of day and weather condition tied to the game's lore.

One example is the area called the Park, where Mold from the Oldest House has spread across the environment and affected nearby buildings.

Despite the name, Remedy says the area is not intended to represent Central Park.

Action RPG Systems Give Players More Build Freedom

The change to an action RPG structure is designed to support more player choice.

Dylan can switch between several Aberrant forms, which function as different weapon configurations.

Players can also unlock paranatural combat abilities by defeating Resonant bosses.

A talent tree and artifacts add further customization.

Artifacts can be changed at any time, while abilities can be respecced relatively freely.

However, Remedy says you cannot unlock everything during one playthrough.

New Game Plus is intended to expand the available build options after the first run.

Bosses Are Tied Directly to Character Progression

Resonant bosses play an important role in progression.

Defeating them unlocks new paranatural combat abilities, making boss encounters part of the character building system rather than isolated set pieces.

Remedy is also introducing a system called the Resonant Cycle, which can reset or upgrade parts of the world and make encounters more challenging.

The studio has not revealed the total number of bosses, abilities, or Aberrant forms.

Melee Combat Required a Major Design Shift

CONTROL Resonant is Remedy's first game built primarily around melee combat.

The studio says development involved considerable experimentation because the team had not previously designed this type of combat system.

Its inspirations included several action games, including Sekiro, Elden Ring, and Devil May Cry, but Remedy says the final system developed into something distinct.

Enemies have also been redesigned around the new combat direction.

The Hiss now includes more aggressive melee focused opponents, while larger new enemies and redesigned Mold creatures change the balance of encounters compared with the first Control.

Side Quests Remain a Major Part of the Game

Remedy says side missions are still heavily narrative driven and can become as unusual as those in the original Control.

The main campaign is estimated at 25 to 30 hours based on internal testing.

Completing the wider range of activities, quests, and exploration is expected to take more than 50 hours.

That gives the game a substantial amount of optional content outside the main story.

Console Performance Mode Targets 60fps

On consoles, CONTROL Resonant will include the familiar choice between quality and performance modes.

Performance mode targets 60fps.

Remedy also expects PlayStation 5 Pro support, although the studio has not yet provided detailed performance figures for that version.

The developer says the game is also designed as an accessible starting point for the wider Remedy Connected Universe.

You will be able to find narrative documents, secrets, and references to other Remedy games, but prior knowledge of Control or Alan Wake is not required to follow the new story.

Remedy began early work on CONTROL Resonant after the original Control, initially with a smaller preproduction team. Development expanded significantly after Alan Wake 2, while the studio also created new world building tools for its Northlight engine to support the larger game.
