Ayaneo Konkr Pocket Advance Revives Game Boy Advance Design With a Modern 960p Display

Ayaneo has introduced the Konkr Pocket Advance, a retro gaming handheld that closely follows the shape and layout of Nintendo’s original Game Boy Advance while adding a modern screen, extra controls, and Android software.

The new device will be released under Ayaneo’s Konkr brand, which focuses on more affordable retro handhelds. Its wide body, horizontal layout, and rounded design are clearly inspired by the Game Boy Advance, although the internal hardware and controls are intended to support a much wider selection of games.

Ayaneo has not announced the processor, memory capacity, battery size, price, or release date. Those missing details will determine whether the Pocket Advance can compete with the growing number of Android based retro handhelds already available.

The 3.5 Inch Screen Supports Accurate GBA Scaling

The Konkr Pocket Advance includes a 3.5 inch display with a resolution of 960 × 640 and a 3:2 aspect ratio.

Nintendo’s original Game Boy Advance used a 2.9 inch screen with a resolution of 240 × 160. Ayaneo has multiplied both dimensions by four, allowing Game Boy Advance games to use clean 4x integer scaling.

Integer scaling enlarges every original pixel into an equal block of pixels on the modern display. This avoids uneven edges, distortion, and the soft appearance that can occur when older games are stretched to resolutions that do not divide evenly.

The larger panel should make text and small visual details easier to see without changing the proportions of the original games. The 3:2 format is also suitable for other systems with similar display shapes, although some platforms may require borders or image cropping.

Ayaneo has not confirmed the panel type, brightness, refresh rate, colour coverage, or whether the display supports touch input.

Familiar Size With a Heavier Body

The Pocket Advance measures 151.3 × 82.4 × 27mm and weighs 224 grams.

Its physical dimensions are close to those of the original Game Boy Advance, although the new device is thicker and considerably heavier. Nintendo’s handheld weighed about 140 grams without accounting for batteries.

The additional weight likely comes from the rechargeable battery, modern processor, wireless hardware, speakers, and more complex control system.

The wide layout places the directional pad and face buttons on either side of the display. This arrangement may feel familiar to anyone who used the original Game Boy Advance and should provide more room between the hands than a vertical handheld.

Ayaneo has shown the device in several colours, but it has not confirmed which versions will be sold at launch.

Extra Shoulder Buttons Expand Emulator Support

The Pocket Advance keeps the basic controls expected from a Game Boy style handheld while adding inputs needed for later systems.

The front includes a directional pad and standard face buttons. Ayaneo is using conductive rubber membranes rather than clicky microswitches, which should give the buttons a softer feel closer to traditional console controllers.

The top includes large L1 and R1 shoulder buttons alongside additional L2 and R2 triggers. These extra inputs are important for emulating systems such as the original PlayStation and Nintendo 64, which require more controls than the Game Boy Advance.

Ayaneo has not shown analogue sticks on the device. Their absence would keep the design closer to the Game Boy Advance but could limit comfort and compatibility in games designed around analogue movement.

The Pocket Advance may therefore be best suited to 2D systems and early 3D consoles rather than platforms that rely heavily on dual analogue controls.

Android and AYASpace Will Manage Games

The handheld runs Android and includes Ayaneo’s AYASpace software.

AYASpace acts as a front end for organising game libraries, opening emulators, and managing system settings. A unified interface can make a retro handheld easier to use by reducing the need to open individual Android applications manually.

Android also gives owners access to a wide range of emulators and native mobile games. The final experience will depend heavily on the processor and software support, neither of which has been detailed.

The device includes WiFi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0. WiFi can support game downloads, updates, streaming, and online features, while Bluetooth may be used with headphones, controllers, or other accessories.

A microSD card slot provides expandable storage. This will likely be important because retro game libraries and Android applications can quickly exceed the available internal capacity, which remains unknown.

The USB C port supports data transfers and charging but is limited to USB 2.0 speeds. That should be sufficient for copying smaller retro games, although transferring large collections may take longer than on devices with faster USB connections.

Key Hardware Details Remain Unknown

Ayaneo has not revealed the processor inside the Pocket Advance.

Without that information, it is impossible to determine which systems the handheld will emulate reliably. Game Boy Advance games should require little processing power, but PlayStation, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, PSP, and newer platforms have progressively higher requirements.

The company has also withheld details about RAM, internal storage, cooling, speakers, battery capacity, and charging speed.

Price will be especially important. The retro handheld market already includes many devices inspired by Nintendo hardware, with options available across budget, midrange, and premium categories.

The Konkr brand suggests Ayaneo may target a lower price than its flagship handhelds. However, the design, custom software, and 960 × 640 display could still place it above simpler Game Boy Advance style competitors.

The Pocket Advance has a clear purpose even without full specifications. Its 3:2 screen and 4x scaling are well suited to Game Boy Advance games, while the additional shoulder controls and Android software expand its potential beyond one platform.

Its final appeal will depend on whether Ayaneo pairs that design with capable hardware, acceptable battery life, and a competitive price.
