AMD has introduced two new Ryzen 400 series laptop processors that remove the dedicated NPU found in the company's Ryzen AI models.
The Ryzen 7 449 and Ryzen 5 439 are part of the Gorgon family and are aimed at mainstream laptops where lower system cost may matter more than dedicated AI acceleration. Neither processor carries Ryzen AI branding because both omit the NPU used for local AI workloads.
This gives laptop makers another option when building systems that do not need Copilot+ class AI performance. Microsoft currently requires at least 40 TOPS of NPU performance for Copilot+ certification, while the new AMD processors fall well below that level because their AI capability comes from other parts of the chip rather than a dedicated NPU.

The Ryzen 7 449 is the stronger of the two chips. It combines four Zen 5 cores with four smaller Zen 5c cores for a total of eight cores and 16 threads.
It can boost up to 5.0 GHz and includes a Radeon 860M integrated GPU with eight compute units running at up to 2.8 GHz.
Compared with the Ryzen AI 7 450, the Ryzen 7 449 gives up the dedicated 50 TOPS NPU and also runs slightly slower. The Ryzen AI 7 450 reaches a 5.1 GHz CPU boost clock and a 3.1 GHz GPU frequency.
Ryzen 5 439 targets cheaper mainstream systems
The Ryzen 5 439 moves further down the range with six cores and 12 threads.
Its CPU configuration uses three Zen 5 cores and three Zen 5c cores, with a maximum boost frequency of 4.6 GHz. The integrated Radeon 840M contains four compute units and reaches 2.8 GHz.

AMD has also reduced the cache compared with some nearby Ryzen AI models. The Ryzen 5 439 carries 8 MB of L3 cache and 6 MB of L2 cache.
These changes should help AMD and its laptop partners position the processor below the company's full Ryzen AI products.
The absence of an NPU does not mean the processors are unable to handle AI related workloads. CPUs and integrated GPUs can still process many AI tasks, but they are less efficient for workloads specifically designed to run on dedicated neural processing hardware.
For buyers who mainly use a laptop for web browsing, office work, media, general productivity or conventional gaming, that difference may have limited practical impact.
AMD's decision also gives manufacturers more flexibility at a time when laptop component costs remain under pressure. Removing dedicated AI hardware can help reduce silicon complexity and support lower priced systems, even though final laptop prices will still depend on memory, storage, displays and other components.
The Ryzen 7 449 and Ryzen 5 439 therefore expand AMD's Gorgon lineup beyond the AI focused segment. They retain modern Zen 5 CPU cores and Radeon integrated graphics while removing a feature that many mainstream buyers may not currently need.
