Do you have an Amazon gift card that you want to use for buying Steam games or credit on your Steam wallet? Do you want to buy a Steam gift card from Amazon? Both scenarios are possible, but some things are a bit more complicated than you would expect. And it doesn’t even matter if you want to use an Amazon gift card or a plain credit or debit card. Here’s how it all works:
How to buy Steam gift cards from Amazon (using an Amazon gift card or not)
Suppose you have an Amazon gift card and you want to “convert it” to a Steam gift card. If you do that, you can use the Steam gift card to buy any game you want from Steam. However, you can only purchase Steam physical gift cards from Amazon, not digital ones. Here are some direct links to help you out:
Unfortunately, the Steam gift cards from Amazon are not digital activation keys like games are. They are physical products that get shipped to your address. When you receive a Steam gift card, you need to scratch the activation code on its back. Keep in mind that Steam gift cards also tend to cost more than their gift card value, and they are not sold directly by Amazon like Steam games are.
PROS: Steam Wallet codes do not typically have country restrictions and can be redeemed worldwide. You can also use your Amazon gift card balance to buy ANY game from Steam, which is fantastic.
CONS: The problem is that it takes time for the Steam gift card to be shipped to your address. You must wait for days until it arrives. Also, you pay more than the value you purchase. That’s because Steam gift cards are not sold by Amazon, as Steam games are, but by third parties who want to make a profit. If you have an Amazon gift card that you want to use for Steam games, we recommend buying Steam games directly from Amazon. Read on to learn how.
Redeem the Steam wallet code from the Steam gift card purchased from Amazon
After you receive the Steam gift card you bought on Amazon, open Steam on your PC, and go to “Games -> Redeem a Steam Wallet Code.”
On the redeem page, enter the wallet code found on the back of your physical Steam gift card, and click or tap Continue.
The credit from the Steam gift card is added to your Steam account. If you never used Steam wallet credit on your account, you may be prompted to enter your address to determine the correct currency. You can now purchase any game on Steam using your Steam wallet credit.
How to buy Steam games with an Amazon gift card
Not many people know that you can buy Steam games from Amazon. You can pay for them using your credit card or an Amazon gift card if you have one. In a way, you can “convert your Amazon gift card” to Steam games. The idea is that the Amazon gift card should be applied to your account before buying games so that you can use its credit for your purchases. Once done, go to the Amazon Video Games, and filter the games shown by selecting Steam as the DRM (Digital Rights Management) system used to distribute and protect them.
Then you see all the Steam games available on Amazon. They usually have the text “Online Game Code” or “Download Code” in their name. When you find your favorite game on Amazon, before buying it, make sure that you look for the DRM that it is used. Amazon Digital Services LLC sells these games, and they can use DRM systems other than Steam.
For example, here’s a screenshot of Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 [Online Game Code] on Amazon, which you can immediately purchase and then activate on Steam for download and installation. We highlighted the DRM information so that you know where you find it. If it does not say Steam, then you should look for other purchase options.
Another example of a popular game that you can buy from Amazon and redeem on Steam is The Outer Worlds: Standard – PC [Online Game Code]. It is available in many editions for many platforms, including a PC Online Game Code you can activate on Steam.
On other Amazon websites, like Amazon.co.uk and other European destinations, Steam games tend to have the text “PC Code – Steam” in their name – e.g., Mafia: Trilogy | PC Code – Steam game. Other than that, there are no differences vs. Amazon.com. They also have Steam listed as the DRM, they are available in multiple editions, for multiple platforms, and they are sold directly by Amazon.
After you have bought a Steam game from Amazon, it is time to activate it on your Steam account. Continue reading to learn how.
PROS: This method is excellent because it is the fastest way to purchase Steam games from Amazon. You can buy and download a game in minutes, the only limitation being the speed of your internet connection.
CONS: The problem is that you get access to a limited portfolio of Steam games. Usually, only major titles can be found on Amazon, sold with the Steam DRM. Many indie titles are sold exclusively on Steam and cannot be bought from Amazon, even if you have a gift card. 😊
How to activate the games you bought from Amazon on Steam
After you buy the Steam game that you want, it gets added to your Amazon account as an activation code and a digital order. It can be accessed by opening your Amazon Account page and going to “Digital content and devices-> Digital games and software.”
Look through the list of items you ordered, find the Steam game that interests you, and look for the Activation Code line highlighted below. This is the code that you need to copy and then paste into Steam.
Then, open the Steam app on your PC, and go to “Games -> Activate a Product on Steam.”
The product activation wizard opens, informing you that you need a product code. Click or tap Next.
Read the Steam subscriber agreement and click “I Agree.”
You are finally asked to enter the product code. Paste the activation code from Amazon, click Next, and then Finish.
The game you bought from Amazon is now in your Steam library and can be installed on your PC.
