Microsoft is reportedly introducing stricter rules for Xbox developers to prevent identical games from offering separate achievement lists across Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
The change targets a practice commonly known as achievement stacking, where developers release multiple versions of the same game, allowing players to earn Gamerscore repeatedly without experiencing substantially different content.
According to an email reportedly sent to developers, Microsoft will require games released across multiple platforms to provide distinct experiences or share their progression systems.
The policy could reduce duplicate listings on the Xbox Store while changing how certain developers distribute their games.
Xbox Developers May Need to Share Achievements Across Versions
Some smaller developers currently release separate Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC editions of the same game.
Each version can feature an independent achievement list, allowing players to earn Gamerscore multiple times by completing similar objectives.
Microsoft reportedly considers this practice a potential violation of Section 10.1 of its Microsoft Store policies, which addresses distinct functionality, value, and accurate representation.
Under the reported changes, developers would no longer be permitted to distribute identical games as separate products solely to provide additional achievement opportunities.
However, genuinely different versions offering distinct experiences may still qualify for separate releases.
The exact enforcement timeline has not been disclosed.
Xbox Play Anywhere and Game Binding Offer Alternatives
Microsoft is reportedly encouraging developers to use Xbox Play Anywhere or game binding when distributing identical games across platforms.
Xbox Play Anywhere allows supported titles to share ownership and progress across compatible Xbox consoles and Windows PCs.

Game binding can connect multiple versions of a title so that achievements and save data remain linked.
These options would allow developers to support different hardware platforms without creating unnecessary duplicate progression systems.
For players, the changes could make switching between supported devices more convenient while reducing repeated achievement lists.
Microsoft Could Reduce Duplicate Listings on the Xbox Store
The reported policy could affect developers producing inexpensive games specifically designed around easy achievement completion.
Although earning achievements quickly is not prohibited, repeatedly publishing nearly identical versions may become harder.
Fewer duplicate listings could also improve game discovery by giving distinct releases greater visibility.
However, the change may disappoint achievement hunters who regularly purchase multiple versions to increase their Gamerscore.
Microsoft has not publicly detailed when the revised enforcement approach will begin or how existing releases will be handled.
For now, the reported developer communication suggests that Xbox intends to place greater emphasis on meaningful differences between releases while encouraging shared achievements and progression across platforms.
