Xbox is aiming to reach 500 million daily players by 2030, according to a leaked internal memo outlining the company’s long term growth plan.
The target represents a major increase from Xbox’s current audience. The company reportedly has more than 100 million daily active players, over 500 million monthly active players, and close to one billion people who interact with its games or services at least once a year.
Reaching the 2030 goal would require Xbox to turn much of its present monthly audience into people who play every day. That would mean adding roughly 400 million daily players within four years, while also improving engagement and generating stronger financial returns.
The plan comes as Microsoft places greater pressure on its gaming business to return to growth. Xbox revenue has continued to decline in recent quarters, and Microsoft leadership reportedly expects the division to improve its performance during the 2027 financial year.
Xbox is organising its strategy around four priorities
The internal plan identifies four areas that are expected to guide the business. These include strengthening the Xbox platform with consoles remaining an important part of the strategy, expanding successful games into larger global franchises, turning Minecraft into a broader creation platform, and giving players more ways to remain connected with the fictional worlds they already enjoy.
| Strategic priority | Main objective |
|---|---|
| Core platform | Strengthen Xbox hardware, services, and the wider platform |
| Content | Expand successful games into global franchises |
| Creation | Develop Minecraft into a larger creator focused platform |
| Connection | Extend established game worlds through new experiences |
The Minecraft goal may be the most ambitious part of the plan. Microsoft appears interested in expanding the game beyond its traditional building and survival format by encouraging more player created content and experiences.
That direction would place Minecraft in closer competition with platforms such as Roblox, which combines games, social features, and creation tools. Roblox recently reported 123 million daily active players, helped by audience growth in countries including India and Japan.
Microsoft does not regularly publish comparable daily figures for Minecraft, so it is unclear how large the gap currently is. However, available estimates suggest Minecraft would need substantial growth to compete at the same daily scale.
Microsoft has divided the plan into three stages
The first stage focuses on restoring growth during the 2027 financial year. The following two years would be used to turn the four strategic priorities into businesses capable of producing stronger revenue and clearer value for players.
The final stage would come in 2030, when Xbox hopes to reach 500 million daily players, achieve double digit growth in engagement, and operate with margins that compare favourably with the rest of the gaming industry.

This schedule gives Microsoft limited room for delays. Xbox would need stronger console performance, continued growth on PC and mobile devices, broader access through cloud gaming, and regular releases from its large collection of studios.
The company also needs to keep players active across its existing games. The memo reportedly states that three Microsoft owned franchises already generate more than $1 billion each year. Call of Duty and Candy Crush are likely among them, while Warcraft may be the third through games such as World of Warcraft and Hearthstone.
Xbox already reaches a large audience, but yearly or monthly activity is very different from daily engagement. The 500 million target therefore depends on more than selling additional consoles or releasing a few successful games. Microsoft must give hundreds of millions of people a reason to return to its ecosystem every day.
The leaked plan provides a clearer view of Xbox’s ambition, but the difficult part will be execution. Its current figures show that Microsoft has considerable reach, while also revealing how far the company remains from its 2030 goal.
