Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition Is Now Included With Meta Horizon Plus

Meta Horizon Plus subscribers can now access Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition at no additional cost, expanding Microsoft’s partnership with Meta Quest.

The benefit includes more than 50 Xbox games, 10 hours of cloud gaming each month and access to Xbox Rewards. The game catalogue can be used across supported Xbox consoles and PC, while the cloud allowance is designed to let Meta Quest owners stream games inside the headset on a virtual screen.

This is not a new public Game Pass subscription tier. Starter Edition was previously introduced as a bundled benefit for Discord Nitro members, and it is now being offered through Meta Horizon Plus as well.

Eligible subscribers should receive access automatically where the programme is available. The included game selection matches the catalogue offered through Xbox Game Pass Essential, although the Starter Edition benefit has its own limits and does not replace a full Game Pass subscription.

Meta Quest owners can stream Xbox games on a virtual screen

The main Meta Quest benefit is the ability to stream supported Xbox games through cloud gaming.

The headset does not turn these games into native virtual reality releases. Instead, they appear on a large virtual display inside the Quest environment, allowing you to play them in a cinema style setup.

A standard Xbox controller can be paired with the headset for the traditional experience. Meta is also preparing an update that will allow Quest Touch controllers to emulate an Xbox gamepad.

The planned emulator will map the buttons and controls of the Quest hardware to the functions of an Xbox controller. This means subscribers will be able to start some games without pairing a separate gamepad.

The feature is expected to roll out in the coming weeks. A physical controller may still provide a better experience for games that rely on precise analogue movement, triggers or more complex button combinations.

The included catalogue is not restricted to Meta Quest.

The benefit may be most useful for people who only play Xbox games occasionally and do not need a larger Game Pass plan. They can access a smaller library without paying for a separate monthly Xbox subscription.

However, Starter Edition does not include every feature available in higher Game Pass tiers. The source material indicates that online console multiplayer is not part of the package.

That limitation means someone who wants to play paid Xbox console games online will still need a separate subscription that includes multiplayer access. The Starter Edition benefit is therefore better suited to single player games, PC access and limited cloud use.

Cloud gaming is limited to 10 hours each month

The monthly cloud allowance is one of the most important restrictions.

Subscribers receive 10 hours of cloud gaming rather than unlimited access. Once that time has been used, they will need to wait for the next monthly period or subscribe to another Game Pass plan for additional cloud access.

Ten hours may be enough for shorter sessions or for testing several games, but it is unlikely to support regular daily play.

The limit also means the benefit works partly as an introduction to the wider Xbox ecosystem. Meta Quest owners can try console games on their existing headset before deciding whether they want a larger subscription or dedicated Xbox hardware.

The catalogue contains more than 50 titles, but Microsoft has not indicated that every game will necessarily be available permanently. Like other subscription services, the selection may change over time.

The partnership gives both companies a wider audience

Microsoft and Meta have worked together before to bring Xbox services to Quest headsets.

Adding Game Pass Starter Edition strengthens that relationship by combining VR content and traditional games within one subscription. Meta Horizon Plus already includes access to more than 100 VR games, so the Xbox benefit broadens the type of entertainment offered without changing the main purpose of the service.

For Microsoft, the partnership provides another way to reach people who may not own an Xbox console. It also supports the company’s wider strategy of making Xbox games available across more devices.

For Meta, the addition makes Horizon Plus more useful outside native VR games and may give former subscribers another reason to return.

The value will depend on how often you use both services. Someone who regularly plays VR games and occasionally streams Xbox titles may benefit from the combined package. Players who mainly want online console multiplayer or longer cloud sessions will still need a fuller Game Pass subscription.
