The Witcher 3 Remastered's Radeon Fix Is an AMD Driver, Not a CD Projekt Red Patch

The fix for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered's rendering faults on Radeon cards came from AMD, not from CD Projekt Red. It is Adrenalin 26.9.2, an optional driver AMD dated September 29, 2026, the same day the remaster went live.

That distinction matters, because the two companies shipped separate things in the same week. Only the driver is aimed at the Radeon-specific breakage, and it is not the update the Adrenalin app offers by default.

What Radeon owners reported seeing

The word that circulated after launch was "unplayable", and it belongs to players rather than to either company. A negative Steam review dated October 3 says performance and graphical bugs make the remaster "unbearable to look at and borderline unplayable".

The reports describe rendering corruption rather than one clean crash signature. Radeon owners on Steam describe grass flickering and turning black, "giant black polygons blocking the screen instead of fire", and translucent black boxes appearing after a load.

Others report hair shading inverting with distance and Geralt's face rendering far too dark. A smaller number report the game refusing to launch at all.

Neither AMD nor CD Projekt Red has published a technical description of any of it. The symptom list comes entirely from player reports.

AMD shipped the game-ready driver on launch day

AMD's release notes for Adrenalin 26.9.2 are dated September 29, 2026, and list The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered under new game support.

The game appears nowhere else on that page. AMD's fixed issues list for 26.9.2 covers Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, War Thunder, Anti-Lag 2 and HITMAN World of Assassination, and the known issues list does not mention the remaster either.

In AMD's own framing, then, this was a missing optimisation profile rather than a logged defect. The driver before it, Adrenalin 26.9.1, is dated September 3 and does not mention the game anywhere.

Radeon owners who updated at any point in the 26 days before launch therefore had no support for the new renderer. The remaster moved the game to native DirectX 12 rendering and added path tracing, ray-traced local shadows and ray-traced HairWorks.

That is a lot of new rendering work for a driver to meet cold. AMD labels 26.9.2 an optional release, and several Steam reviewers on October 1 reported that the Adrenalin app was not offering it.

They told other players to pull it from amd.com by hand instead. One wrote that the update "can only be downloaded on their website and not app".

CD Projekt Red's hotfix addressed other problems

CD Projekt Red released Hotfix 5.00c on October 1. Its patch notes list six changes, and none of them is vendor-specific.

The hotfix repairs saving and loading when the Documents path contains special characters, voiceover audio going quiet after the pause menu, and the inability to launch the classic 1.32 build. It also reverts "a change that caused significant performance and visual issues with HairWorks enabled for some users".

The remaining entries cover telemetry settings and visual adjustments in Velen, including bloom, vegetation lighting, saturation and path tracing lighting. That last item touches vegetation, but the studio does not present it as an AMD fix.

The only pre-launch guidance was one line in CD Projekt Red's September 28 rundown of the update, telling players to make sure they had the latest graphics drivers installed. The studio's support site still carries no AMD-specific known-issue article.

Where things stand now

The practical answer for an affected Radeon owner is to install Adrenalin 26.9.2 from AMD's website rather than wait for the Adrenalin app to serve it. A game patch and a driver update are different installs, and only one of them was aimed at this.

It worked for a lot of people. "I use AMD and although it crashed on startup at first, after updating my drivers I've had no issues," reads one positive review from October 3.

It has not worked for everyone. Reviews dated October 3, two days after Hotfix 5.00c, still describe black flickering grass and broken hair shading on Radeon hardware. One player reported the game still failing to launch after installing 26.9.2 and reinstalling it from scratch.

How many players this reaches is not knowable from the public record. For scale, the RX 9070 XT only reached a 1.33 percent share of the Steam hardware survey in June 2026, and neither company has published a figure for affected users.

AMD's compatibility list for 26.9.2 runs from the RX 9070, 9060 and 9050 series back through RX 7000, RX 6000 and RX 5000 cards, plus Radeon PRO and Ryzen integrated graphics. Windows 10 users should check Smart Access Memory afterwards, since AMD lists the setting switching itself off as a known issue of this driver.

No newer Adrenalin release has followed 26.9.2, and CD Projekt Red has not said whether more work is planned for Radeon cards. The remaster arrived on September 29 as a free 45GB update on most platforms, and its path tracing tier already asks for a Ryzen 7 9800X3D.
