Vincent D’Onofrio has defended Deborah Ann Woll after criticism of her character design in the upcoming PlayStation 5 game God of War Laufey sparked another round of debate around the title.
D’Onofrio, who worked with Woll on Daredevil, responded after a player called for a boycott of God of War Laufey and criticized how Woll’s character, Faye, looks in the game.
The actor rejected the criticism and praised Woll as talented, intelligent and kind. He also said he is a fan of God of War and plans to play the new game with his son.
The player later clarified that the criticism was aimed at Faye’s in game design rather than Woll herself, arguing that the developers had changed her appearance and armor as part of what they described as a feminist agenda.
That claim remains the opinion of the player. Sony and Santa Monica Studio have not presented Faye’s design in those terms.
God of War Laufey Has Faced Debate Since Its Reveal
The discussion around Faye’s appearance is only one part of the reaction God of War Laufey has received since it was announced in June 2026.
Some fans initially objected to the decision to make Faye the main playable character instead of Kratos. Santa Monica Studio has said Kratos remains the God of War and still has more stories ahead.
The studio has also clarified that Laufey is neither a traditional prequel nor a separate spin off. Its events run alongside parts of God of War from 2018 and God of War Ragnarök.
A future game centered on Kratos and directly connected to Laufey has also been confirmed.

Faye’s design has also become a recurring topic online. Some critics have compared her in game face with photographs of Woll and argued that the character model is less attractive than the actress.

The game’s director has pushed back against criticism that reduces Faye to her appearance, arguing that she and Kratos are different characters with their own strengths.
Woll has also addressed the reaction. She said she expected the hostile responses to affect her more than they actually did and noted that she had not personally seen much of the criticism.
She also revealed that God of War Laufey had been part of Santa Monica Studio’s broader plans since 2018, suggesting that the project was not a recent change in direction.
Other Characters Have Also Divided Fans
The controversy has extended beyond Faye.
Phranque, a talking cosmic cube voiced by Jack Quaid, drew criticism from some fans who felt the character appeared too lighthearted for God of War. Rue, a talking ribbon attached to Faye’s sword, received similar reactions.
The development team has defended both ideas.
Game Director Ariel Lawrence said Phranque and Faye were among the first characters established when the project was being developed. The cube also serves gameplay purposes across combat, traversal and puzzles.
The wider reaction follows a familiar pattern in major game releases, where character appearance, gender and casting can become major topics before launch.
Other games have faced similar disputes over female protagonists or character designs, including Battlefield V, The Last of Us Part II, Horizon Forbidden West and Star Wars Outlaws.
In some cases, the backlash has been intense without preventing commercial success. The Last of Us Part II, for example, sold four million copies within its first three days and later won Game of the Year.
That does not indicate how God of War Laufey will perform, but it shows that online controversy does not necessarily predict sales.
The more important test will come when players can judge the complete game rather than individual trailers, screenshots or character models.
God of War Laufey is scheduled to launch on February 16, 2027, exclusively for PlayStation 5, with preorders currently priced at $69.99.
