Police in China have detained two men accused of stealing 16 memory modules from gaming computers installed inside hotel rooms.
The alleged thefts took place across four esports hotels in Shihezi, a city in the Xinjiang region, during May 2026. Investigators estimate that the stolen components were sold for more than 13,200 yuan, which is approximately $1,840.
The case began when hotel staff noticed that several gaming PCs would no longer start during routine maintenance. After opening the systems, they discovered that the RAM modules had been removed.
The unusual setting reflects the popularity of esports hotels in parts of China. These businesses combine private accommodation with gaming facilities, allowing groups to stay overnight while using high performance PCs installed directly inside their rooms.
Suspects Reportedly Visited Four Hotels
According to the police account, one suspect initially booked a room alone and removed two memory modules from one of the computers.
When the first theft was not immediately detected, he allegedly recruited another person. Between May 15 and May 31, the pair reportedly visited four different hotels and removed another 14 modules.
The compact size of desktop RAM makes it relatively easy to conceal and transport. Removing the modules also takes only a few minutes if the computer case can be opened without special tools.

The missing memory prevented the affected computers from booting, which helped hotel staff identify the problem. However, the thefts were discovered only during maintenance rather than immediately after each guest checked out.
Stolen RAM Was Sold Through Several Channels
The suspects allegedly sold the memory through second hand trading platforms and local computer stores.
RAM can retain a large portion of its value on the used market, particularly during periods of limited supply or rising prices. Buyers may also find it difficult to determine whether a used module was stolen unless the hardware has identifying records or the seller behaves suspiciously.

Investigators reviewed surveillance footage, hotel guest registration details, and information showing when each computer stopped working. These records reportedly helped police connect the affected properties and identify the two suspects.
Both men were arrested the day after investigators established their identities. They were placed under criminal detention while police continued searching for the stolen hardware and examining the full extent of the case.
Authorities have not confirmed how many of the 16 modules have been recovered.
Esports Hotels May Need Stronger Hardware Security
Esports hotels face a different security challenge from conventional accommodation businesses. Their rooms can contain several expensive computers, monitors, graphics cards, processors, and other components that guests can access without direct supervision.
A complete gaming PC may be difficult to remove unnoticed, but smaller parts such as RAM, SSDs, and processors can be more vulnerable. Some components can be taken quickly and may not be missed until the system is tested again.
Operators can reduce the risk by using locked cases, tamper seals, internal sensors, or case intrusion alerts. Recording component serial numbers may also help identify stolen hardware if it later appears in a shop or online marketplace.
Routine checks after guests leave could reduce the time between a theft and its discovery. Hotels may also need to compare system health records with room access and registration information.
The case shows how rising hardware values can create new risks for businesses that place gaming computers inside private rooms. Esports hotels offer a convenient experience for groups, but their operators may need stronger safeguards to protect components that are small, valuable, and easy to resell.
